The Lutheran Church of Honolulu was established by a small German community on Oahu in 1900. For the first 35 years, services were conducted in German. It has been a great joy to honor this tradition in recent years by celebrating New Year’s with a festive Vesper service. As always, the centerpiece of this service will be one of the Cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach written specifically for this day.

The year the Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir, soloists and the Bach Chamber Orchestra will present Bach’s Cantata Nr 28 Gottlob! nun geht das Jahr zu Ende and Johann Kuhnau’s Magnificat in C with added Christmas interpolations. Pastor Fritz Fritschel will deliver the homily in German. Congregational chorales will be sung in both German and English and the service order will follow that of St. Thomas Church, Leipzig.

This is a wonderful way to celebrate the New Year. We invite you to join us for refreshments following the service.
