Associate Pastor Angela Freeman.

My idea of a perfect day is... leisurely enjoying my morning coffee, soaking in a good book and spending time outside with my my 6-year-old black lab, Molly.

My biggest challenge is... to listen well—deeply listen to people’s stories and to God’s desires.

My life verse is... “But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don’t take yourselves too seriously—take God seriously.” Micah 6:8 (The Message)

My last meal would be... Oh Gosh... I love good food—vibrant flavors, fresh, delicious—I couldn’t choose one “last” meal.

I am happiest... when I can be creative either in the kitchen cooking for people, getting my hands dirty the garden, or dabbling in music or art. I’m also happiest when I’m in the woods hiking with my dog.

My favorite Bible character is... Lydia (Acts 16:11–15) She is a great example of a woman from the ancient world who was faithful, smart, independent, and not dictated by the culture of oppression and ownership of women that surrounded her.  Lydia is a witness of being one with an open heart and mind to receive the Gospel of Jesus and whose life was changed and transformed by it.

The best advice I could give a 20 year old is... explore the world, even if it is just your backyard and the city you live in. Keep your curiosity and creativity alive and do what you love.

Transforming experience... One of my first transformative experiences was the summer I spent in Tanzania when I was only 20. The time with our brothers and sisters of the Lutheran Church of Tanzania enhanced my love of travel, but even more, the time deepened my passion for sharing the Gospel of Jesus with all whom I meet—crossing cultures, boundaries, and our human-made divisions.

The one thing I want to make sure people know about LCH is... that no matter where you are in your spiritual life, personal life, and everything in between, there is a place for you here at LCH. This is a community of faith where you don’t have to leave yourself at the door. Bring your whole self—that’s who God delights in.

Pastor Angela Freeman grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where her parents continue to reside. She completed her bachelor’s degree at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, WI (MMC is a woman’s college where she first delved into theology and German). Pastor Angela had a variety of study and travel experiences throughout her education and training toward ordination. She spent time in Germany developing her language skills and studying theology at the Universität Leipzig and while serving at Thomas Kirche. Her clinical pastoral education (CPE) took place at the native Eskimo hospital and nursing home in Nome, Alaska. Pastor Angela was trained as a missionary through the ELCA and was sent to Copenhagen, Denmark, to serve as the intern (vicar) to the International Church of Copenhagen. It is there that her passion for ecumenical ministry was fostered as well. Pastor Angela was ordained in 2005 to serve as solo pastor to First Lutheran Church of Malden, Massachusetts. Pastor Angela is delighted to join the LCH family and make her home here in Honolulu.

Pastor Angela’s passions outside of work time are hiking with her best friend, Molly the black lab, spending time at the ocean, cooking and eating good food, and quality time with the people she loves.
