LCH E-News—July 30, 2008From Pastor Jeff—One of Those Weeks
The good news is that with help of some talented members and more patience than I usually can muster, we were able to get everything up and running within a few days. Many thanks to Bill Fay who did some troubleshooting on the Accounting Computer and determined that is was not repairable. He built us a custom computer (which I am using right now) and has been a great help in getting everything up and running including most of our software. Thank you Bill! I found myself pretty irritated by the whole event not because it made more work, but because the office equipment breakdowns brought the work we hoped to accomplish that week to a grinding halt. The event highlighted for me how dependent we as an office and as a society have become on technology. When it works, we are able to accomplish a great deal and communicate smoothly, but when it breaks down, look out! Of course we were able to come up with creative alternatives for almost everything. We are fortunate to have staff and volunteers who are gifted in figuring out how to get things dome in a pinch. I was able to get the brochures printed by tricking the copier into thinking it was a copier. Coleen wrote checks using an old program on her Macintosh, and we delayed the accounting until our new computer came on line. I found that in fact we are less dependent on technology than on the people running the technology. Creativity, problem solving, willingness to pitch in and patience were more important that the machine themselves. I also had a lesson reiterated that was relayed eloquently by Biz Person: “We plan, God laughs.” Pastor Jeff LCH Sponsors “Sunset in Makiki Park”
The accompanying photo shows the LCH table with brochures, worship time information, and shell lei which were given to everyone who walked by the table. Pastor Jeff was at the table both days and had the opportunity to meet many a lot of people. Performances by Jake Shimabukuro and Frank Delima were highlights of the weekend. We plan to participate in as many neighborhood events as possible to help get the word out about the wonderful at LCH and invite others to be a part of our family. We also hope to learn more about how we can be more effective in our neighborhood. Many thanks to Brian, Peggy, Mary Jo, Billie Jean, Ilsa, Jean, Seth, Coleen, and others for making this event a success. Thank you Peggy for donating lei! Pau Hana this Friday!Join us this Friday, August 1st, for our second Pau Hana Party. We will be set up at 4:30 and will begin serving dinner any time after 5:30. We are right near the beach under the shade of trees and on a grassy area. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks, and place settings are all provided. You are welcome to bring a side dish, pupus, or dessert, but don’t feel obligated. Invite your friends, bring your kids, go swimming, eat, have fellowship!
