From Pastor Jeff

Pastor Jeff LilleyTo everything there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

Ecclesiastes 3

Monday I watched in amazement as the Dow Jones Industrials plunged 777 points in a single session. Throughout the day, pundits, politicians, and just plain folks pointed fingers left and right looking for someone to blame. Congress’ failure to pass the bailout bill, corporate greed, lack of political leadership, and general fiscal irresponsibility bore the brunt of the blame. But, there seems to be universal agreement that the financial season is changing more rapidly than most of us can cope. Banks fear widespread panic, international markets are tumbling, and many of us are concerned about the state of our investments for retirement. Some are simply afraid. At the core of our fear may be that we do not fully understand the nature of the financial collapse or how to fix it, and what we do not know scares the bejeebers out of us.

For some, this will be a time to break down; for others, a time to build. Some will insist on weeping, and others will laugh (somewhat hysterically). Depending on how you invested (or didn’t), it might be a time for dancing or a time for mourning. What the author of Ecclesiastes begs us to remember is that whatever season we are experiencing, God abides in the midst of it. Certainly the financial crisis is terribly important, but there is a lot of living, dying, hoping, and loving going on that also demands our attention. Jesus constantly challenged the importance of wealth and reminded us that the greatest treasure we have is not tied up in the Dow Jones Industrial index, but in God’s constant love for us and our love for one another. That is something no investment guru can give us, and no collections agent can take away.

Welcome Kanani!

We welcome Kanani Rosehill as the new Administrative Assistant for Lutheran Church of Honolulu.

Kanani comes to LCH following 16 years working for Foodland Corporation and brings a wealth of management experience and education to her position. Knowledge gained from her MBA program at Hawaii Pacific University will be a valuable asset as we grow our congregation. Kanani’s duties will include office management, management of church-owned properties, supervision of maintenance staff, accounting clerk duties, and working with committees and staff to ensure a growing and vibrant ministry at Lutheran Church of Honolulu.

Kanani was born in Hilo but has spent all her life in Kaneohe. She says “shopping” in her hobby. When asked if she had anything to add, she replied, “I am here to do my part in serving the church!”

Honu Ohana

Honu (turtle) graphicA couple of weeks ago, every member and friend of the congregation received an invitation to attend a Honu Ohana meeting as part of Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s Fall Stewardship effort. These 20 minute meetings are a fun, informative, and inspiring chance to explore what it means to be a steward of God’s wonderful creation and God’s ministry here at LCH. We ask that each person associated with our congregation be willing to attend one of several opportunities offered. Responses have been trickling in, but many of our Ohana have not yet responded. You can sign up for one of our meetings by calling the church office at 941-2566 or by email to <honu@lchwelcome.org>.
