From Pastor Jeff

Pastor Jeff LilleyOver the past several months I have been working with one of our members on various plantings around the church grounds. She has dug and fertilized, planted and pulled, redone beds, watered and reconfigured a number of beds. But one bed has been, well, to put it politely, problematic. This bed is just outside my office. River stones have been lovingly arranged to represent the “Rose Window” logo that you seen on of LCH’s stationary and signs. It is a circle with a cross extending out of the center making four quadrants in the circle. The idea behind this bed was to plant different colored flowers in each quadrant resulting in an artistic interpretation of window which now hangs just inside the entry to the nave.

The first planting looked absolutely wonderful...for the first four days. On the fifth day, the edges of the plants began to fade and curl up at the edges. Blooms that had been quite lovely fell off, and it appeared they would not be coming back any time soon.

A couple of weeks later I came into the office to find the rocks straightened out and brand spankin’ new plants in the planter. Blooms decorated each plant, and the cheery demeanor of the bed had returned...for about two weeks. Oh well, it turned out those plants needed more sun than advertised and had curled up for nice end of life experience.

A week later I returned to find the bed adorned with more stones and a new splash of color. Strong, dark leaves punctuated with bright red flowers now brighten the garden outside my office. They seem to be doing pretty well, and once they are out of their pots, they should grow vigorously and beautifully into an attractive bed for everyone to enjoy. The nursery expert assured her that these would be perfect for our location, and so far that has proven to be true.

I am so impressed with the tenacity of our member who has patiently and lovingly continued to work toward her goal despite several setbacks. With each failure, she tried something different. When that idea did not work out, she got more information and replanted. Despite the occasional herbal carnage, she did not seem discouraged or tempted to quit. She does what she can, when she can, and keeps a cheerful heart as she does this small ministry that benefits every person who walks by. A little effort, a small financial investment, and some river rock have made a sanctuary for any one willing to take a moment to sit on the bench and listen to the sound of the breeze through wind chimes, enjoy the antics of the lizards, and listen for God’s voice. One person did all this!

What is truly exciting is that all sorts of people at LCH are doing just these sorts of things. Bulletin boards, gardens, awnings, music programs, feeding the hungry, and cleaning and repair are done by wonderful volunteers who know what out church means when it says “God’s Work, Our Hands.” Thank you, all of you, and come sit by the garden sometime.
