LCH E-News—August 13, 2009From Pastor JeffJust a Lot of Hot Wind
Were our preparations a waste of time? No way! There is always another hurricane, power outage, or natural disaster coming down the pike. We can’t stop them, but we can be ready to take care of ourselves, our neighbors, and strangers in need. This time the hurricane was just a lot of hot wind, but who knows what time will bring? In the same way, God’s community called “the church” remains ever vigilant and prepared to receive and even seek out God’s people throughout the world. We don’t know who will blow our way, but we will be ready with blazing candles, bread, wine, love, and a kind home. May God be our strength to be fully present and prepared to receive the stranger, comfort the afflicted, and share love with those whose lives seem afflicted by the hurricane of living every day. THREE SERVICE SCHEDULE RESUMES THIS SUNDAY!The LCH worship schedule resumes three services each Sunday beginning this Sunday, August 16th. Worship with Holy Communion will be shared at 8:00 am and 10:30 am. Compline will be shared at 9:00 pm. Please join us for all of some of our worship opportunities. SUNDAY SCHOOL CHECKS OUT “THE BIG TEN”Sunday School begins this Sunday at 9:10 am with a study about the “BIG TEN.” Please bring your children and share a wonderful experience in music and learning. Presentation on Oberammergau Trip this Sunday!Pastor Jeff will offer a presentation on the upcoming tour to Germany and the Oberammergau trip this Sunday, August 16th, in the Boardroom. Even if you are not interested in going on the trip, come and learn about the sites and sounds of Luther’s Germany. Join Pastor Jeff and Jean Lilley for unique opportunity to tour the sites where Luther walked and see the Passion Play in Oberammergau. Our trip will begin in Berlin and include visits to Wittenburg, Eisleben, and many other historic sites. The crown of the trip will be the Passion Play in Oberammergau. The play is performed only once every 10 years and is reported to be truly inspiring. The dates for the trip are June 4th–15th, 2010. For more information please visit the tour website below. Like most Island residents I began getting ready for Hurricane Felicia a week early. Costco was already low on water, but there was plenty of rice, spam, tuna, and dried beans. I loaded up my cart and headed home where I battened down the hatches, and turned on the weather radio. Seth pulled together flashlights, batteries, candles, and the wind-up emergency radio. We were ready, but the torrential rains and howling winds never came. Early Tuesday we woke to a gentle rain, clouds, and a little breeze. Felicia had petered out somewhere over the Pacific.
