LCH E-News—September 24, 2009

From Pastor Jeff

Pastor Jeff Lilley“Why are your disciples working on the Sabbath?” Jesus found himself confronted with this question as his disciples eased their hunger by eating grain as they walked through the field. Jesus surprised the religious authorities by asking them: “Is man made for the sabbath, or it the sabbath made for man?”

Sabbath—the day dedicated to God, to rest, to re-creation—is not a burden or duty, but a gift given by God for God’s people. “Six days shall you work, but on the seventh day you will rest,” says God in Genesis. For God’s people it is to be a day unlike the other days of the week.

In the Christian tradition, it is a day that includes gathering with God’s people to sing, hear God’s word, be refreshed in fellowship and hope, and, hopefully, rest. Sabbath is God’s gift for you. Good Sabbath!

Aloha,
Pastor Jeff
