From Pastor Jeff

The Family Dinner

Pastor Jeff LilleyOnce the four boys in our family reached their early teens, my family seldom ate together at the family table. We were the beginning of the TV generation, and I spent most of my meals sprawled in front of the TV devouring macaroni and cheese and Star Trek in equal portions. It was the 70s—eating with family was not a priority.

Recent public service announcements stress that time together at the table engenders trust, love, and compassion within the family. If statistics are correct and the average father spends less that five minutes per day in conversation with his child, then dinner together represents a relational bonanza for the average family!

The same is true for our ‘ohana here at Lutheran Church of Honolulu. Several folks have pointed out to me that we don’t know each other very well. Most members interact with a very small group on Sunday morning, and an even smaller group outside of worship. When we gather together outside of worship for ‘ohana gatherings, Pau Hana, potlucks, and fellowship outings, we come to know each other in a deeper, more meaningful way that helps build the body of Christ. As we come to know (and like) each other, we will find new joys in our lives together.

Our Stewardship Team (affectionately called “The Stew Crew”) are inviting members and friends of the congregation to participate in ‘Ohana Gatherings around the theme “Following Jesus.” This is a fantastic opportunity for you to get to know folks from the LCH ‘ohana, and for them to get to know you! I strongly encourage you to let go of whatever is keeping you from joining for an ‘ohana gathering and sign up today! Some promises from the “Stew Crew”:

  • You will not be asked to make a financial pledge at this meeting
  • You will not be given a pledge card
  • You will not be recruited to volunteer for a committee
  • You will have the opportunity to explore your faith
  • You will have fun!
  • You will eat
  • You will be blessed by the experience.

Please take a moment right now to sign up for one of the remaining ‘Ohana Gatherings. If none of the times works for you, contact the Church Office and let them know, and we will try to work out an alternative arrangement.

Aloha,
Pastor Jeff
