LCH E-News—January 13, 2010

From Pastor Jeff

Pastor Jeff LilleyThis week we received news of a terrible earthquake in Haiti resulting in a huge loss of life and property. Reports from the area describe collapsed buildings, schools, hospitals and homes. The dead remain uncounted, and the injured have few avenues of recourse for treatment. Often described as the “poorest nation in the hemisphere,” Haitians live on the equivalent of a dollar or so per day and have little in the way of resources to cope with this disaster. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is committing at least $250,000 in initial aid for the region and $500,000 in donations collected from congregations and individuals of the ELCA. The ELCA has the largest presence in Haiti of all the Lutheran World Federation Partners and will likely take a lead in disaster relief among the Lutherans. So what can we do? First, we need to be prayer for our brothers and sisters:

“Let us pray. God of light and healing, we lift up before you this day our brothers and sisters in Haiti who are suffering the effects of this terrible earthquake. Bring comfort to those who mourn, strength to those who are afraid, direction to the bewildered, and hope to the hopeless. Help us to be your hands to feed those who are hungry, bring water to those who are thirsty, light to those who sit in darkness. We also give thanks to those who are coming from around the world to bring aid to those in need. Open our hearts and our hands to what is possible in you.”

Second, we can contribute. You are welcome to donate directly to any agency you prefer, or you can donate through LCH or the ELCA. Below you will find links that will provide you more information and the opportunity to give online.

Though they are far away, let us keep those in need near in our hearts.

Pastor Jeff

Book of Faith Bible Study Thursday, Jan 14, 10:00 am

Book of Faith logoJoin the Book of Faith Study group this (and every Thursday) in the Boardroom for Bible Study and fellowship. We are just getting started studying the Book of Romans. Often regarded as one of the earliest New Testament writings, the letter to the Romans is Paul’s powerful—and sometimes controversial—theological treatise. We will study Chapters 2 & 3 this Thursday. Persons of every level of biblical knowledge are welcomed and encouraged to join this very fun group. (Peggy has been known to cancel golf so she doesn’t miss it!)
