Ash Wednesday Service Tonight
Memorial Service for Jeanette Hanson
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, February 20th, 10:30 am at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou Street, Honolulu, Rev. Jeff M. Lilley presiding. You are invited for a lunch reception immediately following the service. Congregational Retreat Feb. 27thAll LCH members and friends are invited to participate in a planning and mission retreat on Saturday, February 27th, at LCH. We will begin at 10:00 am under the leadership of Olivia Castor and the Congregational council. Using the recently completed LCH Ministry Plan as a framework, we will explore the present and future ministry of the congregation and begin to chart out our mission for the next few years. Tonight we gather for worship with the Liturgy of Ashes. This ancient rite begins the Lenten cycle of fasting, repentance, preparation for baptism, and reflection. We begin the season with these words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” This somber reminder of our mortality contrasts with our modern culture’s fascination with over-abundance of life. No matter how long we live, or how much we accumulate in our lifetime, eventually we return to the dust from which we came. In the times between our birth and our dust-ness, God stands ever near.
Begin your Lenten journey tonight with Ash Wednesday Imposition of Ashes and Eucharist. The service begins at 7:30 pm.
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Jeanette Hanson passed away Monday, February 15th, following a battle with cancer. Jeanette was deeply involved in her family, her church, and her community. She will be sorely missed. Please keep Jeanette’s family in your prayers during this difficult time.
Join the Book of Faith Study group this (and every Thursday in the Boardroom) for Bible Study and fellowship. We are just getting started studying the Book of Romans. Often regarded as one of the earliest New Testament writings, the letter to the Romans is Paul’s powerful, and sometimes controversial theological treatise. Persons of every level of biblical knowledge are welcomed and encouraged to join this very fun group.
