LCH E-News—September 29, 2011
Only 2 Days Left for Give Aloha!
Lutheran Church of Honolulu will once again participate in the Give Aloha Program sponsored by Foodland/Western Union. You have two days left to participate!!
How does it work? During the month of September, you may donate up to $249 to the Give Aloha Program at any Foodland or Sack N Save. Give them the LCH Organization Code (78224) at the time of your donation. Foodland and Western Union will match every gift received up to $300,000 for all combined participating organizations.
LCH has consistently been in the top 100 organizations. So please go to Foodland or Sack N Save and make your donation today!
If you want your contribution recognized on your LCH giving report, please give a copy of your receipt to the church office or put it in the offering plate. You can identify your contribution for the general fund or for a particular purpose (i.e. capital improvements). For tax purposes, you should list your contribution as having been made to Give Aloha and not LCH.
The Mozart Konzert
October 1, 7:30 PM; October 2, 4:00 PM
Concertgoers will be introduced to a fortepiano—the only one (to the best of our knowledge) in Honolulu—at the opening concerts of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s Abendmusiken Series, on October 1 and 2, featuring the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The fortepiano, built by Philip Belt (called the father of the modern fortepiano) will make its debut by Carl Crosier, soloist, who received it from the estate of his late piano teacher, Else Geissmar, formerly on the University of Washington faculty. The fortepiano, the forerunner of the modern piano, has a reverse-color keyboard and only two strings per note as opposed to three strings today. It also has a knee lever instead of a foot damper pedal and uses leather instead of hard felt hammers.
Works to be performed include the Fantasia in D minor (K. 397), Piano Quartet in G minor (K. 478), Violin Concerto in A (K. 219), Exsultate Jubilate sung by Georgine Stark (K. 165), and the Violin Concerto in A major (K. 219), with Darel Stark as soloist and conductor. The string soloists of the Bach Chamber Orchestra will be using gut strings, rather than the modern steel, and using lighter bows, to balance with the more delicate voice of the fortepiano. Miguel Ángel Felipe, newly-appointed Director of Music and Liturgy at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, will make his conducting debut with the Bach Chamber Orchestra with this concert.
Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at <www.lchwelcome.org/music2011>. General admission is $25 and full-time students with ID are $15. Further information may be obtained by calling the church office at 941-2566 or Katherine Crosier at 221-9608.
Munchies for Mozart
The Concert Committee is looking for some culinary support! The first Abendmusiken Series concert is coming up in two weeks and we’re requesting donations of food for the two concert receptions. Performances will be on Saturday, October 1, and Sunday October 2, in the Nave with receptions to follow in the courtyard. If you can bring sweet baked goods or other munchies anytime before then, we’ll store them in the sacristy freezer/fridge and enjoying them after a beautiful evening of Mozart! Thank you, in advance, for your generosity.

Calling All LCH-Begoners
A few years ago, LCH members started volunteering as a group to answer phones during the Hawai‘i Public Radio pledge drives. We now specifically request to be on duty when “Prairie Home Companion” airs on Saturday night.
It’s now time for the Fall Pledge Drive for Hawai‘i Public Radio, and the station has reserved Saturday night, October 15, for LCH to staff the phones and take pledges. The inimitable Bob Zimmer, who is lifelong friends with PHC cast member Butch Thompson, will appear as an on air guest again to add to the fun.
To expand the name recognition of LCH, we will be doing the following two things this time:
- Serve tuna hot dish to staff and volunteers while we chat about LCH, LutherFest and other upcoming events.
- Issue a challenge to all other Lutherans listening to the show to call in and match our pledge. (Our challenge will comprise the money that any of you were planning to donate to Public Radio and would be willing to lump in with others’ gifts so that we can make a statement. We will not be using church funds for the challenge.)
We also bring green jello, salad and rolls. There will be plenty of other food if you are not craving tuna hot dish that night.
Please contact Josie Bidgood through the Church Office (941-2566) if you can help with the phones on October 15 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM or if you are willing to contribute to the “LCH Challenge.”
