LCH E-News—November 30, 2011From Pastor JeffWorld Aids Day December 1It is hard to believe that after all these years, we still need to have World AIDS Day. Despite the efforts of thousands of scientists and billions of dollars in research, HIV/AIDS still infects tens of thousands of people each year. In 2009, agencies estimated that over 33 million persons were living with AIDS. Unfortunately, funding for research has dropped as public interest in the disease has been shoved onto the back burner. Funding for treatment is shifting to “hot spots” resulting in financial shortages in places like Hawaii. But we can’t put AIDS on the back burner. It remains a devastating killer in sub-Saharan Africa, and is growing in incidence among our youth and young adults. Please join me tomorrow at the State Capitol for World AIDS day and show your support to the world that we are committed to an AIDS free world. If you can’t attend, please make a donation to the Life Foundation or one of the World AIDS organizations. Mahalo, Governor Neil Abercrombie to Speak at World AIDS Day Event at State Capitol

Together as the ELCA, we do more than we could ever do alone: grow our congregations, inspire new leaders and care for those around the world who live with hunger and poverty. ELCA Good Gifts are a creative way to do just that. Your gifts go beyond your regular congregational offering to support the ministries of the ELCA that mean the most to you and your loved ones. As we move into the Advent season, this is the perfect time to consider ways in which we can help others in our world around us.
