From Pastor Jeff

A Resurrection Life

Pastor Jeff LilleyIn the popular movie/book “Hunger Games,” the protagonist Katniss finds herself fighting for her life in a twisted battle to the death in a contrived gaming field not unlike the Roman Coliseum. The purpose of the games is to remind those who live in the districts outside the Capital City that they have no power, no recourse, and no hope. Each year two of their young people are chosen at random to entertain the residents of the Capital in a grisly televised spectacle of death. In the midst of the battle, Katniss becomes a symbol of hope for those stuck working, suffering, and starving in the districts. The politicians in the Capital recognize immediately the danger of hope, and they unleash every power at their disposal to crush it. In the end, Katniss is not the enemy of the empire, hope is the enemy.

One of my favorite authors once commented that those in power around Jesus killed him not for who he was, but because he brought hope to the hopeless—a condition no self-respecting empire can tolerate. In so many ways, our lives as Christians are defined by hope. We believe St. Paul when he tells us, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38). We believe Jesus when he tells us “I will be with you always.” We have the opportunity, even the mission, to live a life defined by the hope of the resurrection despite all the pressures to the contrary.

What a joy to live a resurrection life.
