This page listes each spiritual gift along with the meaning of that gift, its scriptural basis, and examples of how you can put it to use in the life of LCH. If you’re ready to try out your gifts, use the link at the end of the explanation to volunteer for one of the ministries associated with that gift. Opening Your Spiritual GiftsAdministrationAdministration is the gift that enables a believer to formulate, direct, and carry out plans necessary to fulfill a purpose. And after they had appointed elders for them in each church, with prayer and fasting they entrusted them to the Lord in whom they had come to believe. (Acts 14:23) At LCH, the gift of administration can be used in these ministries: Congregation Council, Finance Committee, Financial Secretary, Sunday School Superintendent. Volunteer to try out your gift of administration in one of these ministries. ArtistryArtistry is the gift that gives the believer the skill of creating artistic expressions that produce a spiritual response of strength and inspiration. I have filled him with divine spirit, with ability, intelligence, and knowledge in every kind of craft, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, in every kind of craft. (Exodus 31:3–5) At LCH, the gift of artistry can be used in these ministries: Liturgical Arts, Drama, Film/Photography Work, In Stitches, Altar Guild, Decorating Team, Design Team, Page Layout. Volunteer to try out your gift of artistry in one of these ministries. DiscernmentDiscernment is the gift that motivates a believer to seek God's will and purpose and apply that understanding to individual and congregational situations. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual. ((I Corinthians 2:12–13) At LCH, the gift of disceernment can be used in these ministries: Congregation Council, Long Range Planning Team, Social Ministry Team, Peer Counseling, Support Group Facilitator. Volunteer to try out your gift of discernment in one of these ministries. EvangelismEvangelism is the gift that moves believers to reach nonbelievers in such a way that they are baptized and become active members of the Christian community. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. (Matthew 28:19–20a) At LCH, the gift of evangelism can be used in these ministries: Prospective Member Visitation, Evangelism Team, Advertising and Marketing, New Member Sponsor, Community Visitation. Volunteer to try out your gift of evangelism in one of these ministries. ExhortationExhortation is the gift that moves the believer to reach out with Christian love and presence to people in personal conflict of facing a spiritual void. May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain; when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me. ((II Timothy 1:16–17) At LCH, the gift of exhortation can be used in these ministries: Mutual Ministry Team, Hospital or Home or Institution Visitation, Telecare Ministry, Peer Counseling, Small Group Leader. Volunteer to try out your gift of exhortation in one of these ministries. FaithFaith is the gift that gives a believer the eyes to see the Spirit at work and the ability to trust the Spirit's leading without indication of where it all might lead. Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him. (Genesis 12:1–4a) At LCH, the gift of faith can be used in these ministries: Congregational President, Stewardship Team, Long Range Planning Team, Teacher/Bible study leader. Volunteer to try out your gift of faith in one of these ministries. GivingGiving is the gift that enables a believer to recognize God's blessings and to respond to those blessings by generously and sacrificially giving of one’s resources (time, talent, and treasure). Jesus looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.” (Luke 21:1–4) At LCH, the gift of giving can be used in these ministries: Capital Campaign Steering Team, Stewardship Team, Volunteer Coordination, Giving Personal Testimony. Volunteer to try out your gift of giving in one of these ministries. HospitalityHospitality is the gift that causes a believer to joyfully welcome and receive guests and those in need of food and lodging. Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. (Luke 10:38) At LCH, the gift of hosptiality can be used in these ministries: Aloha Team, Usher, Fellowship Committee, Pau Hana Fridays, New Member Sponsor, In-Home Bible Study Host. Volunteer to try out your gift of hospitality in one of these ministries. IntercessionIntercession is the gift that enables a believer to pray with the certainty that prayer is heard and when requests are made, answers will come. Pray in the Spirit at all times in every prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert and always persevere in supplication for all the saints. (Ephesians 6:18) At LCH, the gift of intercession can be used in these ministries: Prayer Chain, Prayer Partner, Prayer Families/Prayer Circles, Worship Assistant, Healing Station. Volunteer to try out your gift of intercession in one of these ministries. KnowledgeKnowledge is the gift that drives a person to learn, analyze and uncover new insights with regard to the Bible and faith. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit. (I Corinthians 12:8) At LCH, the gift of knowledge can be used in these ministries: Parish Resource-Library Coordinator, Nominating Team, Long Range Planning Team, Congregation Council. Volunteer to try out your gift of knowledge in one of these ministries. LeadershipLeadership is the gift that gives a believer the confidence to step forward, give direction and provide motivation to fulfill a dream or complete a task. ...the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. (Romans 12:8) At LCH, the gift of leadership can be used in these ministries: Sunday School Superintendent, Youth Leader, Committee Chairperson (all types), Fellowship Activity Coordinator, Congregational President, Speaker-Special Events. Volunteer to try out your gift of leadership in one of these ministries. MercyMercy is the gift that motivates a believer to feel deeply for those in physical, spiritual, or emotional need and then act to meet that need. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” (Matthew 25:34–36) At LCH, the gift of mercy can be used in these ministries: Home or Hospital or Institution Visitation, Transportation to Worship/Bible Study, Social Ministry Team, IHS Meals, Angel Network, Support Group Leader, Telecare Minister. Volunteer to try out your gift of mercy in one of these ministries. Music—VocalMusic—Vocal is the gift that gives a believer the capability and opportunity to present personal witness and inspiration to others through singing. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. (Psalm 100:1–2) At LCH, the gift of music—vocal can be used in these ministries: LCH Choir, 8:00 O’Clock Ensemble, Compline Choir, F.R.O.G.S. Choir Leader or Member. Volunteer to try out your gift of music—vocal in one of these ministries. Music—InstrumentalMusic—Instrumental is the gift that inspires a believer to express personal faith and provide inspiration and comfort through the playing of a musical instrument. Praise the Lord with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! (Psalm 150:3–6) At LCH, the gift of music—instrumental can be used in these ministries: 8:00 O’Clock Ensemble Leader or Member, Choir Pianist, Special Event Music, Substitute Organist, F.R.O.G.S. Chamber Orchestra Leader or Member, Aloha Jam. Volunteer to try out your gift of music—instrumental in one of these ministries. Pastoring (Shepherding)Pastoring (Shepherding) is the gift that gives a believer the confidence, capability and compassion to provide spiritual leadership and direction for individuals or groups of believers. In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable; convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. (II Timothy 4:1–2) At LCH, the gift of pastoring can be used in these ministries: Adult In-Home Bible Study Leader, New Member Sponsor, Young-Adult Counselor, Small Group Leader, Telecare Minister. Volunteer to try out your gift of pastoring (shepherding) in one of these ministries. Service (Helps)Service (Helps) is the gift that enables a believer to work gladly behind the scenes in order that God's work is fulfilled. I commend to you our sister Phoebe...for she has been a benefactor of many and of myself as well. Greet Prisca and Aquila, who work with me in Christ Jesus.... Greet Mary, who has worked very hard among you. ... Greet Urbanus, our co-worker in Christ.... Greet those workers in the Lord, Tryphaena and Tryphosa. Greet the beloved Persis, who has worked hard in the Lord. (Romans 16:1–12 selected verses) At LCH, the gift of service can be used in these ministries: Computer Programmer/Data Entry, Newsletter Collation, P.A./Sound System Technician, Tape Recording Worship Services, Child Care, Building/Grounds Upkeep, Kitchen Cleaning Team, Providing Transportation, Altar Guild, Worship Assistant, IHS Meals. Volunteer to try out your gift of service (helps) in one of these ministries. Skilled CraftSkilled Craft is the gift that enables a believer to create, build, maintain or repair items used within the church. I have filled him with divine spirit, with ability, intelligence, and knowledge in every kind of craft, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, in every kind of craft. (Exodus 31:3–5) At LCH, the gift of skilled crafts can be used in these ministries: Building Maintenance or Upkeep, Electrical or Masonry or Plumbing or Roofing, Mechanical Repair and Maintenance, Audio-Visual Operator and Repair, Computer Maintenance, Web-Page Developer. Volunteer to try out your gift of skilled crafts in one of these ministries. TeachingTeaching is the gift that enables a believer to communicate a personal understanding of the Bible and faith in such a way that it becomes clear and understood by others. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. (I Corinthians 12:28) At LCH, the gift of teaching can be used in these ministries: Adult Bible Class Teacher, Sunday School Teacher, Teen Bible Class Teacher, Youth Leader, Conference or Seminar Leader. Volunteer to try out your gift of teaching in one of these ministries. WisdomWisdom is the gift that allows the believer to sort through opinions, facts and thoughts in order to determine what solution would be best for the individual believer or the community of believers. Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. ... And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual. (I Corinthians 2:6–7,13) At LCH, the gift of wisdom can be used in these ministries: Long Range Planning Team, Congregation Council, Peer Counselor, Support Group Leader, Mutual Ministry Team. Volunteer to try out your gift of wisdome in one of these ministries. WritingWriting is the gift that gives a believer the ability to express truth in a written form; a form that can edify, instruct and strengthen the community of believers. Beloved, while eagerly preparing to write to you about the salvation we share, I find it necessary to write and appeal to you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. (Jude 3) At LCH, the gift of writing can be used in these ministries: Newsletter Article Writer, Website Article Writer, Newsletter Editor, Announcement Writer, Public Relations or Publicity Committee, Letter Writing, Writers’ Workshop. Volunteer to try out your gift of writing in one of these ministries.
