Thanks to Kathy Crosier for some of the photos on this page.
Compline regulars and alumni gathered to rehearse on Saturday afternoon.
Following the rehearsal, friends and family joined the choristers for a seven-course Chinese dinner at On On Restaurant. Following dinner, Carl Crosier passed out a list of all those who have sung at Compline over the years and gave special recognition to Dale Noble and Larry Nitz, both of whom had sung at the first Compline.
First row: Carl Crosier, Kathy Crosier, Carol Langner, Keane Ishii; Second row: Betsy McCreary, John McCreary, Bill Potter, Paul Schwind, Fritz Fritschel; Third row: Bud Klein, Randy Castello, Jerome Vasconcellos, Gerald Altwies, Frances Altwies, Mary Reese, Linden Doescher, Mollie Chang; Row four: Steve Jensen, Allen Bauchle, Paul Beck, David Del Rocco, Larry Nitz, John Bickel, Alex Golub, Roy Helms, Dale Noble, Josh Graber, Eric Doescher, Kate Golub.
The Compline Choir provided the music for Festival Choral Eucharist on Sunday morning.
The introit was “God be in my head” by Henry Walford Davies, and the service music was from Edward C. Bairstow’s “Communion Service in E flat.”
The anthems were Ego sum panis vivus (I am the bread of life) by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Ave verum corpus (Hail, true body) by Ludovico da Viadana.
As they do every week, the choristers gathered at 7:30 to rehearse for Compline, but this week was a little different. Several alumni joined the group for this special service, and because they were all scheduled to participate in the Pre-Compline discussion, they only had an hour to prepare. Fortunately, they had rehearsed some of the music at the Saturday rehearsal.
During the regular time for Pre-Compline discussion, Carl Crosier reviewed the history of Compline at LCH—including a brief discussion of Carl’s introduction to Compline at St. Mark’s Cathedral (Seattle), the first Compline at LCH on August 1, 1976, and names of some of the participants over the years. Several choristers shared their own observations from their time in Compline.
The anniversary service may have been the grandest Compline ever at LCH. The fifteen singers presented a variety of music: Psalms 4 and 134 (Peter Hallock), Te lucis ante terminum (To Thee before the close of day—Office Hymn—Mode VIII and Thomas Tallis), Nunc dimittis (Charles Wood), and two anthems by Jacob Handl: Adoramus te, Christe (We adore Thee, O Christ) and Salva nos Domine, vigilantes (Preserve us).
