Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 18—July 31, 2016

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: We continue looking at great characters from the Bible with E for Esther. Esther was a Jewish serving girl in the court of the Persian who became queen. One day there was a plot against the Jewish people, and Esther took a risk and appealed to the king. Thankfully, it turned out fine, so this story reminds to stand up for people in trouble even if it’s dangerous for us.

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: We continue looking at great characters from the Bible with D for David. Long ago the Philistine attacked the people of Israel, led by their hero, the giant Goliath. David went out with just his slingshot and his faith in God, and he killed Goliath. And later he became the greatest king of Israel.

Summary: We continue looking at great characters from the Bible with C for Cephas, better known as Peter. Jesus gave him the name Cephas or Peter, which means “rock.” Cephas had great faith and really loved Jesus, so we can say he really rocked.

Summary: We continue looking at great characters from the Bible with B for Barnabas. He was a companion of Paul, and they travelled all over the Mediterranean world telling people about Jesus. They lived out God’s love, peace, and joy, and you are all called to do the same.

Summary: There are lots of Sundays after Pentecost, so I want to start looking at great characters from the Bible in alphabetical order. If we start with A, we have Abraham. Abraham and his wife Sarah were old and didn’t have any children, but God promised to give Abraham as many descendants as the stars in the sky. Sarah laughed at this promise, but they ended up with many children. We are all descendants of Abraham, our ancestor in faith.

Summary: Today I brought this ceramic jar. It could hold cookies or other things, but got cracked. I usually throw away broken things, but I kept this because I made it and it’s pretty to look at. In today’s Gospel we heard about a women who is a little broken, but Jesus loves her. Even if you are a little broken, God loves each of you just the way you are.

Holy Trinity—May 22, 2016

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is Trinity Sunday. The Trinity is one way we talk about God. It can be helpful, but there are also many other ways to talk about God. Martin Luther said that we should get up each morning and make the sign of the cross in the Name of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit so that we remember to whom we belong.
