Worship at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu

As part of our welcome to non-Christians and others unfamiliar with “churchy” language, we have added explanations and definitions for words shown in green type. Follow this link for additional information.

The Lutheran Church of Honolulu currently offers two morning worship services. On the first and third Sundays of each month, we have Evening Prayer at 7:30 PM.

During the summer months (June 2 to August 25, 2013), LCH has one Sunday morning worship at 9:15 AM. This service uses elements from both morning worship styles.

All worship services take place in the Nave.

Holy Communion—Sunday mornings at 8:00 AM (9:15 AM beginning June 2, 2013)

The 8:00 Ensemble leads the music at our early worship serviceIn this family worship, we gather with joyous contemporary music to praise God and prepare for our service in the world.

The ensemble of singers and instrumentalists—guitar, flute, violin, french horn, steel drums, and piano—lead us to sing our hopes and beliefs.

Our pastor teaches us about God’s love as revealed in the Bible, both in a special children’s conversation and in the adult sermon.

Pastor Jeff Angela Freeman distributes communion at the altar rail. And we all gather around the communion table to share in God’s feast of love. As part of our committment to welcoming all, gluten-free wafers and grape juice are available at holy communion.

Children are welcome to remain in worship, and nursery care is provided from 7:45 AM until noon.

Christian education for all ages follows this worship service at 9:20.

We hope you will join us for worship.

Choral Eucharist—Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM (9:15 AM beginning June 2, 2013)

The LCH Choir singing at worshipIn this choral worship service, our fine choir leads us in worship with great liturgical music, both classical and modern. The majestic sounds of our German-built tracker organ inspire us to prayer and praise.

Our pastor opens up the Biblical message of God’s love for both children and adults.

Evening Prayer—First and third Sunday evenings at 7:30 PM

Pastor Angela Freeman leads the prayers and the choir leads the reponses during Evening PrayerEvening Prayer services are quiet, meditative services held twice monthly on the first and third Sundays. The Evening Prayer liturgy is simple with emphasis on Word, reflection, and music. The services are lay-led and do not include communion. Instead, the liturgy includes elements commonly found in the traditional evening services such as Vespers, Compline, and Evensong.

On the third Sunday, Evening Prayer is preceded by “Exploring Boundaries...and Beyond,” an exploration of ideas and values at the boundaries where our faith meets the rest of the world. The presenters come from LCH, the universities, and the wider community. The presentations begin at 6:00 PM in Isenberg Hall and end at 7:15, in plenty of time for Evening Prayer. More information and a schedule of presentations is available on the Exploring Boundaries...and Beyond page.

Please note that in some months a major worship event may replace Evening Prayer. On those evenings, service will still be at 7:30 but may be a Vespers service with the LCH Choir or an event like Advent Procession.
