Pentecost—May 11, 2008

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is Pentecost. We hear how the Holy Spirit came to the disciples in a mighty wind and with tongues of fire. How do we know the Holy Spirit is here with us? Do you hear the wind or see tongues of fire? We know the Holy Spirit is here when we see this shopping cart filled with food for the hungry. And we know the Spirit is here when you and everyone are filled with gifts of singing and play and love.

Easter VII—May 4, 2008

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today we hear the disciples ask if it is time for the kingdom to be restored. If I ask you what time it is, you may say, “It’s church time.” That’s a good answer, but who is the church? It’s you and all of everyone here. And God sends the Holy Spirit to help us be the church.

Easter VI—April 27, 2008

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: This Sunday we hear Jesus say that he would leave us and send the Paraclete. Do you know what that is? You know that Jesus is in our hearts, but how can Jesus get out of our hearts? We can feel the wind blow, but we can’t see it. In the same way, we can feel the Spirit moving. We also know about the Spirit because people tell us. We can tell others about the Spirit, and that’s how we can give the Spirit and Jesus to others.

Easter V/Earth Day—April 20, 2008

Preacher: Jim Sullivan
Summary: This is Earth Day. Earth Day began a long time ago—in 1970—because people were concerned about what we are doing to the Earth. Pretend this pair of chopsticks represents you and the Earth. If I give you only one half, you won’t be able to eat. But when I give you the other half, you can eat. We human beings must work in harmony with the earth to have plenty to eat and a nice world to live in.

Easter IV—April 13, 2008

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: This is “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Have you ever seen a sheep? What are they like? Sheep are cool but not too bright, so they need a shepherd. Shepherds take care of sheep, so they recognize the shepherd. Like a shepherd, Jesus call us, and we know that it is God calling.

Easter III—April 6, 2008

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: The story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus is a fun one. Who showed up? Jesus. And did they recognize him? No, not until he broke the bread. Have you ever seen that? No? Yes, you have, but you haven’t been paying attention. We do it each Sunday. When we break the bread in communion, we want you—and everyone—to see Jesus and recognize him right here.

Easter II/RIC Sunday—March 30, 2008

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: My lei is made of rainbow ribbon, and it was given to me by a friend who thinks being inclusive is important. The rainbow is a sign of God’s love and hope, and Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Sunday is a sign of hope. We invite everyone to be a part of our ‘ohana. Our differences don’t matter. Like this lei, we are woven together into a beautiful and strong whole.

Easter Sunday—March 23, 2008

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Do you remember when we buried the “Alleluia!” many weeks go on the Sunday before Lent started? Today is Easter Sunday, Jesus rose from the dead, and we have a job to do. We need to let the “Alleluia!” out.
