Last Epiphany: Transformation Sunday—February 14, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is Transfiguration Sunday, That’s a big word that is like metamorphosis—you know, when a caterpillar changes to a butterfly. Jesus wants us to grow wings and be transformed through God’s love.

Time after Epiphany • Lectionary 5—February 7, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: I love today’s Gospel because it talks about boats, and I love boats. Jesus took Peter out into deep water, and they caught lots of fish. Then he sent them out to fish for people. We can be fishers of people when we tell them about God’s love.

Time after Epiphany • Lectionary 4/Reconciling in Christ Sunday—January 31, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus was preaching in his home town, but they didn’t like his message and tried to kill him. Jesus was talking about reconciliation—bringing people who have become separated back together. Reconciliation is one way God’s love works in our lives.

Time after Epiphany • Lectionary 3—January 24, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s first lesson we hear how Nehemiah read the Bible to the people for six hours. It sounds boring, but they heard the history of their people in many stories. And all those stories told about God’s love. You all have Bibles at home, so I hope you will get someone to read those stories so you can learn more about God’s love for you.

Time after Epiphany • Lectionary 2—January 17, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is the second Sunday after Epiphany, a Greek word that means “to make known.” Epiphany is like God playing peek-a-boo because we get a look at God in Jesus. When we play peek-a-boo, we laugh, and we should have the same joy during Epiphany.

Baptism of Jesus—January 10, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today we celebrate the baptism of Jesus. Jesus was baptized as an adult. He was dunked in the water, and when he came up, a voice from God said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” In your baptism, God also says, “You are my beloved child, and I am pleased with you.” We remember this important truth today and every day.

Second Sunday after Christmas—January 3, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: I know you got many wonderful Christmas gifts. Did anyone ever bring gifts to Jesus? That’s right. The Magi brought gifts, and this Sunday, you can see them with their gifts in the crèche. This is one reason we give gifts, but Jesus is the greatest gift of all.

First Sunday after Christmas—December 27, 2009

Lessons and Carols—No Sermon

Advent IV—December 20, 2009

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Four candles are lit on our Advent wreath, so Christmas is near. Today we are going to talk about the last of the Advent symbols we see in church. You see that banner with the sun? The sun gives energy and light, and without the sun, we couldn’t have any life on earth. Jesus is the Son of God and the light of the world. “Son” is spelled differently, but we couldn’t live without Jesus, so the sun is a good Advent symbol.

Advent III—December 13, 2009

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today we are going to talk about another of the symbols in church. You see that banner with the star? Stars give light at night, but they also can guide us. The Polynesians followed stars to come to Hawai‘i, and you know a start guided people to Jesus when he was born. The star reminds us of Jesus and how we can find our way to Jesus.

Advent II—December 6, 2009

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today we are going to talk about one of the symbols in church. You see that flower banner, and do you see the roots? Roots are important, and those roots represent an important person: Jesse. He was the father of David and the ancestor of Jesus. So, who does the flower represent? That’s right. It’s Jesus.

Advent I—November 29, 2009

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: This is the first Sunday of Advent, and we are beginning our countdown to Christmas. It is like this book with a front cover, a back cover, and lots of pages in between. The front cover is like creation, the back cover is like the last days we hear about in today’s Gospel. These are in-between times, and we are like the pages between the covers. These pages are very important because God loves us every day.
