Last Sunday after Epiphany/Transfiguration of Our Lord—March 6, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is the Sunday of the Transfiguration, an uncommon word about changing one’s being. It is also the last Sunday before Lent, a season when people give up things. One thing we will give up is the word “Alleluia” in worship. So I want you to help me hide this Alleluia until Easter.

Eighth Sunday after Epiphany—February 27, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Sometimes we worry about things. I once ran out of gas, and my daughter worried for years that it would happen again. It took her a long time to stop worrying and trust me not to run out. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not to worry because God will be with us. We learn to trust that God loves us, and we don’t have to worry.

Seventh Sunday after Epiphany—February 20, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls us to be perfect. We think perfect means not doing anything wrong, but Jesus really used a word that means finished. Even though you may sometimes make mistakes, you are perfect because you are finished products of God’s love.

Sixth Sunday after Epiphany/Faith and Arts Sunday—February 13, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is Faith and Arts Sunday, and you can see lots of art from members around the church. You can be an artist without faith, but art does help us live out our faith. The stories we tell in our art help us share the gifts God has given us.

Fifth Sunday after Epiphany—February 6, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus says we are salt. Salt doesn’t taste good by itself, but it makes food taste good. That’s because salt transports flavor. Jesus wants us to transport God’s love to others so they can see and understand that love.

Fourth Sunday after Epiphany/Reconciling in Christ Sunday—January 30, 2011

Preacher: Peggy Anderson
Summary: You have all seen rainbows, and you know that the rainbow is a symbol of God’s love and welcome to all. We have a rainbow right here in church. It’s our rainbow banner at the entrance to the Nave. It shows our welcome to all.

Third Sunday after Epiphany—January 23, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus called the disciples to fish for people. We are surrounded by an ocean full of fish, so you have probably all been fishing, but have you ever fished for people? What bait would you use? The disciples we fishing for people by using the love of God, and we can all do the same by sharing the love of God.

Second Sunday after Epiphany—January 16, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: When I was young, I was part of a club with a secret handshake. I’ll teach you all so you can be members. When you were baptized, you didn’t learn a secret handshake because God welcomes all of us just the way we are. You—and everyone else—receive the love of God, and it doesn’t cost you anything.

Baptism of Our Lord—January 9, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today we remember that baptism of Jesus, but do you remember your baptism? Jesus came to John as an adult and asked to be baptized. When he came out of the water, there was a dove and a voice saying “This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.” We have a dove near our baptismal font, so when you were baptized, you saw a dove, and you heard the same words. So, let us celebrate Jesus’ baptism, and your baptisms, and everyone’s baptisms.

Christmas II—January 2, 2011

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is the ninth day of Christmas. It is still Christmas, and in today’s Gospel, we heard of the Word in the beginning. We know that a new beginning starts with Jesus. Jesus came not just for Christmas Day but for all time. Christmas is always a part of who we are because God’s gift of Jesus is always with us.

Advent IV—December 19, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: This is the fourth Sunday of Advent, so it will be Christmas soon. You say you are excited about your travels, presents, and many other things, but I’m most excited that “God with us” is coming. We sometimes forget what Christmas is all about, but I hope that every day between now and Christmas, you will think about “God with us.”

Advent III—December 12, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: This is the third Sunday of Advent (which means coming), and we know Jesus is coming from the candles and other signs. In our Gospel, John asks if Jesus is the one, and Jesus tells him to look at the signs. I want you to look for the signs of Christmas, but I also want you to be signs of God’s presence through kindness, love, and prayer.

Advent II—December 5, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: This is the second Sunday of Advent (which means coming), and today we find out who is coming. Isaiah tells us about a branch from the root of Jesse. A few weeks ago, I found this stick and put it in a dirty coffee cup, and you can see the roots. Soon it will have branches. God made a new branch from the root of Jesse—Jesus the Messiah. God’s love and justice grow like the branches outside my office. And you are also branches growing from God’s love.

Advent I—November 28, 2010

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Now “advent” means coming, and that’s because Jesus is coming at Christmas. We see signs in the Advent candles and blue vestments. Blue is the color of hope, and we have hope because Jesus is coming. And we prepare by putting on Christ, or putting on love.
