Christ the King—November 25, 2012

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday of the church year, and next Sunday is the First Sunday in Advent. We think of kings as men with lots of money, a crown, and beautiful robes. But Jesus is a different kind of king because he is not a king because of his birth but because of his death on the cross. Jesus, our king, is the king of love.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 33—November 18, 2012

Preacher: Pastor Angela Freeman
Summary: Sometimes when you play Simon Says, the leader will try to trick you. In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns us about being led astray, or tricked. Jesus wants us to pay attention so we do what God wants us to do. So, let’s all be alert.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 32—November 11, 2012

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Some of you have had a lot of money from time to time. If someone had asked you to give it all away, it would have been very difficult. In today’s Gospel, a widow put about a penny in the offering, and Jesus said it was worth more than other huge offerings. Jesus calls on us to give ourselves away in love and respect and caring for others. I’m going to give you each a penny, and I want you to take it out every day and think about what the widow did with her penny.

All Saints Sunday—November 4, 2012

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is All Saints Sunday, so we need to know what a saint is. The Bible dictionary says that a saint is someone set apart for God’s purpose. We think of famous holy people, but by this definition, you are all saints because you were set apart at baptism. You were all set apart to love, so today is for you.

Reformation Sunday—October 28, 2012

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today is Reformation Sunday, and we remember how Martin Luther read God’s word and got very excited about what God was doing. He started to ask important questions about how God relates with people, and he talked about God’s love and forgiveness, which we call grace. Grace sets us free to care for others, and that’s what we celebrate today.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 29/Children’s Sabbath—October 21, 2012

Summary: In place of the Children’s Conversation and Sermon, the children from the Sunday School presented a skit based on today’s Gospel from Mark 10:35–45. Disciples James and John ask to be first in the kingdom, and Jesus says that they will have to suffer as he suffers, but he cannot give them what they want. The other disciples are angry, and Jesus says that those who want to be first must be servant of all.

No audio available of the skit.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 28—October 14, 2012

Preacher: Pastor Angela Freeman
Summary: Today I brought my favorite things to show you. If I give them all to one of you, you won’t be able to hold them all. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the man to give away all his stuff because it can get in the way. When you go home, I want you to think about whether your stuff gets in the way and crowds out God.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 27—October 7, 2012

Preacher: Pastor Angela Freeman
Summary: When I put my glasses on wrong and opened the book wrong, I couldn’t read it, but you helped me do it right. In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about divorce—a very difficult subject. Sometimes we have these difficult situations, and we need help from others. As we continue through our lives, let’s be ready to help one another on our journeys.
