Reform!

October 31, 2017, marks the 500th anniversary of Luther’s posting of the 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church. The worldwide Lutheran Communion has chosen this date to mark the beginning of the Reformation, which would prove to be one of the most important historical movements in modern history. Observances of the quincentenary will occur in key cities around the world including several in the United States.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has adopted the theme “Freed & Renewed in Christ: 500 Years of God’s Grace in Action” and has encouraged congregations, regions, and synods of this church to observe the anniversary in ways best suited to local and regional cultures and customs. At the same time, we are encouraged to explore ways in which we can carry out observances that build bridges between us and our ecumenical and interreligious neighbors.

Locally, a couple of planning efforts are underway. Clergy and lay persons of the ELCA and Lutheran Church Missouri Synod are planning a joint picnic in the Fall of 2017 to lift up our joint roots as Lutherans in the U.S. While plans are still being formed, we envision a picnic with music, singing, and ecumenical guests. In addition, there will be opportunities throughout the year to hear from scholars and other leaders about the Reformation and its impact on history and the future.

Apart from the events with our LCMS partners, ELCA Congregation members and clergy are also planning a festival worship with a very special guest preacher, a festival choir, and special music at which both ecumenical and interreligious guests will be invited. LCH will sponsor a major concert in the late fall that will reflect the theme of the year in orchestral and choral music. Plans are underway to bring two major Luther scholars to the island to lead community-learning events as part of the observance.

So, why all the bother for something that happened in Europe 500 years ago? One of the keystones for the Lutheran Church is that we continue to be a reforming movement within the church. In The Freedom of a Christian (1520) Martin Luther famously wrote “A Christian is lord of all, completely free of everything; a Christian is a servant, completely attentive to the needs of all.” Our understanding of the Reformation draws us into a life and faith that is constantly changing to better serve our neighbor and the world.

For Luther, and for us, it is simply not acceptable to remain so steadfastly attached to our own traditions that we no longer see what God is up to in the world. Perhaps the best reason to lift up the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation is the simple fact that the Reformation continues to unfold along with God’s kingdom, grace abounds in a world desperately in need, and hope flows like streams in the desert. We pray that we might join in what God might be up to for the next 500 years!

Restoring Creation—Renewing Christ’s Community

Our theme for year-round stewardship this year is “Restoring Creation—Renewing Christ’s Community.” It’s a theme that is both inspiring and intimidating.

During September, our congregation was engaged with both parts of the theme. Our liturgy for morning worship called us to make a way, even where there seems to be no way. The liturgy lifted our spirits, inspired commitment, and reminded us that God feeds us and is always with us. At the same time, outside of worship the news reminds us of devastating weather on neighbor islands, on the American continent, and around the world, and we know there is much to be done. We also experienced renewal of Christ’s community when we received the newest members of our ‘ohana in the sacrament of baptism. These are good first steps, but of course, there is more to do in both areas.

During the month of October, we challenge you to focus your hearts and minds on renewing Christ’s community in our congregation. As part of our “Called Forward Together in Christ” discussions this summer, we shared ideas for strengthening or renewing our community of faith. One set of ideas revolved around reinvigorating the small group ministries of our congregation. Elsewhere in this issue of The HeartBeat, you will find information about In Stitches, the Adult Forum, our Poetry Group, Book of Faith Bible Study, Food for Thought, Writers’ Workshop, the Women’s Book Club, and Mary Magdalene Society and their meetings this month. If you’ve never participated in one of their groups, why not go and check it out? If you were part of one but stopped participating because you were just too busy, make time to go this month. And if you don’t see a group that appeals to you, talk with Pastor Jeff about starting up a new group.

Let’s all do our part to renew Christ’s community at LCH.

Congregational Participation Trends Meeting

Saturday, October 1, 10:00 am–2:00 pm • Calvary by the Sea

ELCA pastors Tim Mason and Yukio Hamada invite all interested congregations to attend an informal meeting to talk about the present situation regarding membership trends and budgets. The meeting will convene in Ohana Lani, the school area of the Calvary church campus. All are welcome.

Calvary will provide lunch for all attendees, so an estimate of those attending from each church will be helpful. Please contact the LCH church office if you wish to attend.

Feast of St. Francis—Blessing of the Animals

Sunday, October 2

Recognizing God’s love for all creatures and in celebration of the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, please join us this Sunday for the Blessing of the Animals during worship at both the 8:00 am and 10:30 am services. We will have pet treats available for the social hour and water stations to keep our friends comfortable. There will also be a pet-free zone for those who may be uncomfortable sitting next to a water buffalo or a duckbill platypus.

Feel free to bring your pets of various species to church with you. Please be mindful of temperament and companionability. Some pets simply do not get along with others and should remain comfortably at home. We will bless them from afar.

Without exception, all pets must be leashed or caged at all times while on campus. Free flights of large birds and unfettered wandering of Bengal tigers will, no doubt, lead to unpleasantness. So please, religiously observe the commandment to cage and leash at all times.

Angel Network In-Gathering

Sunday, October 2

On the first Sunday of each month, an in-gathering of food and personal items is collected at LCH for Angel Network, a ministry based out of Calvary-by-the-Sea Lutheran Church. The items are taken to Angel Network during the following week. Over 2,500 individuals are served monthly through this program. We are grateful for your generosity and support.

Godly Play—Sunday School News

Sunday Mornings 9:20–10:20 am

LCH offers Sunday school for children from kindergarten through senior high. The older children (grades 6–12) meet in the Rainbow room. The younger children (grades k–5) meet in the Godly Play room. All are welcome!

Compline Service

The office of Compline will be sung by men from the Lutheran Church of Honolulu Choir on the Feast of St. Francis. A tradition at LCH begun by Carl Crosier in 1976, this service combines Gregorian plainsong with psalms and polyphonic works in a quiet, contemplative setting to end or begin your week. All are welcome.

Book of Faith Bible Study

The Book of Faith Bible study meets on Thursday mornings in the boardroom. All are welcome to join this lively discussion of the Biblical texts, relevant current events, and historical foundations. The group is currently studying the book of Proverbs. Please join us for lively engaging fellowship and discussion!

Confirmation Preparation Classes

Thursdays, 6:15 pm • Rainbow Room

Confirmation is a voluntary program for youth, grades 6 and up, who would like to confirm their faith. At baptism we promise to “place in (your child’s) hands the Holy Scripture and provide for their education in the Christian Faith.” In confirmation class we study scripture, the Reformation, and Christian history, but we are more interested in helping young people develop as persons of faith.

This year we are having confirmation class on Thursday evenings, including dinner. If you are interested in having your youth participate in confirmation preparation, please contact Pastor Jeff.

LCH Night at Hawai‘i Public Radio

It’s time for the Fall Pledge Drive for Hawai‘i Public Radio. We claimed “Prairie Home Companion” (that most-Lutheran of Public Radio programs) as our night to help with the pledge drive several years ago, and the tradition continues. Again this year, the station has reserved Saturday night, October 15, for LCH to staff the phones and take pledges. In addition to enjoying a fabulous dinner of tuna hot dish by Chuck Pearson, we get to meet like-minded folks on the phone. This is a great way to expand LCH name recognition to those who may not know about us. We are acknowledged throughout the night by the on-air hosts, and we issue a challenge to other listeners.

If you already plan to make a pledge this fall or just want to be part of the LCH Challenge, please let Josie Bidgood know by calling the LCH office 808-941-2566. We’ll add your donation to the amount that others traditionally pledge, including that stalwart who always throws 35 cents into the pot. IHS Meals Prepared and Served

Friday, October 21, 1:30 pm prep and 5:30 pm serve

For over 25 years, LCH has shopped for, prepared, and served a special dinner on the third Friday of each month for over 300 of Honolulu’s homeless. The cost is underwritten by the LCH budget and by a grant from the German Benevolent Society of Hawai‘i. Shoppers, cooks, and servers are needed each month. LCH to March in Gay Pride Parade

Saturday, October 22 • 9:00 am at Magic Island

The LCH congregation will have an entry in Honolulu’s Gay Pride Parade on October 22. All members and friends are encourage to be part of the fun as we witness to God’s inclusive love. We meet in the Magic Island parking area around 9:00 am, units should be in place by 10:00, and the march to Kapi’olani Park starts 11:00.

Bring sunscreen, water, and hat; wear comfortable shoes; and join in showing our welcome to all.

Renewing Creation Hike

Saturday, October 22 • 10:30 am, at the top of Waimano Home Road

Join us for a hike along the Mokulē‘ia Trail on Saturday, October 22. David Anderson will guide us on this work project to weed invasive species such as strawberry guava and Christmas berry and out plant native species. This trail is an easier hike, and there is a short off trail that leads to Mākua Valley overlook.

We will meet at Pearl City at 10:30 at the top of Waimano Home Road. The road ends at the Pearl City Department of Public Health compound, and there is area to park off the road on the left. David has reserved three trucks for the day, so if we have two volunteers to drive a four wheel drive vehicle, we will be able to take 14 people; if we don’t have volunteers to drive, we will be able to take twelve people. Please sign up on the table in the courtyard so we have an accurate head count.

Please bring a lunch, drinking water, and gloves and wear comfortable clothing including sturdy shoes. Depending on the weather and road conditions, we may need to hike ½ mile to the trail head. All participants will need to sign a liability waiver and a photo use waiver.

Mary Magdalene Society

LGBTQI and friends, please join our potluck supper and games or video night in Isenberg Hall. Supper begins at 6:00 pm with games or video to follow. Set up begins at 5:30, and help is greatly appreciated. Please bring a food item to share.

For October, we’re encouraging everyone to try out their Hallowe’en costumes at Mary Magdalene Games and or videos are also welcome for after-dinner entertainment. One Pot, One Hope

Saturday, October 29, 10:00 am

A consistent group of LCH volunteers helps feed 100 to 125 people each month in Wai‘anae. Help support this mission outreach project by participating or by bringing donations of designated items—Costco gallon-sized cans of chili, fresh fruit, granola bars, bottled water, recycled grocery bags, and large cardboard boxes—or checks, payable to “One Pot, One Hope.” Bring donated items to church on the third Sunday of the month (October 16). See Peggy Anderson for more information, including volunteering and carpool.

LutherFest!

Saturday, October 29, 5:30 pm

Come celebrate our Lutheran heritage at our annual LutherFest, where we eat, drink, laugh, and have fun in the Hörmann Courtyard. Festivities will begin at 5:30 pm with light pupus and non-alcoholic punch provided. Beer and wine are available for a donation. A German themed potluck follows at 6:00 pm. Brats will be provided, but please bring a German dish, if possible. To help ensure a balanced table, we suggest the following guidelines:

• A thru L—main dish
• M thru Z—side dish

You can look online for suggested German dishes like sausages and sauerkraut, sauerbraten, roast chicken, potato salad, potato dumplings, spatzle, and many other options.

Our dessert contest this year is “tropical fruits”! Think of guava, papaya, bananas, pineapple, etc. and all the different things you could do with them. There’s banana cream pie, pineapple upside-down cake, a guava chiffon cake in the shape of the Luther rose—the possibilities are endless. Judging will be based on use of the special ingredient, Lutheran heritage, taste, and appearance.

Voting for the contest and donations for beer and wine will be by LutherBucks, so bring a check or cash to exchange for your LutherBucks. Donations will will benefit Youth Outreach Waikīkī.

Bach Clavierübung III The German Organ Mass

Reformation Sunday, October 30 • 7:00 pm

Former LCH organist, Katherine Crosier, will be performing the large settings of this masterwork, containing Johann Sebastian Bach’s most musically complex and technically demanding compositions for the organ. She will be joined by a chamber choir under the direction of Scott Fikse, which will sing the Bach chorales on which each of the settings is based.

Proceeds will benefit the Carl Crosier Memorial Fund at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu. Suggested donation $25.

2017 Budget Projections

Committee leads, if you have not done so already, please send your budget estimates for 2017 to Steve Miller. An email was sent to all committee leads on September 12, providing spreadsheet information showing what each committee actually spent for each of the last four years. Please refer to the spreadsheet, then estimate what you will need for 2017. (Note: If a donor specifies that their donation should go to a specific project, then it is not counted against your budget.) Be aware that 2017 is the 500th Anniversary of the 95 Theses—the associated celebrations will mean you may need to budget for extra expenses.

Please send Dr. Miller the dollar estimate of your 2017 budget as soon as possible. We need to finalize the budget for presentation to council by December 1. If you did not receive the budget estimates request email, or if you have questions regarding your budget projections, please contact Steve Miller or the LCH office.

We are grateful to all who participated in the Give Aloha Program sponsored by Foodland/Western Union during the month of September at local Foodland and Sack ‘n’ Save locations.

Note: If you made a contribution and want it listed on your giving statement, please put your receipt in the offering plate or leave it in the office, clearly noting your name. Although, for tax purposes, your contribution is listed as “Foodland” or “Sack ‘n’ Save,” we are happy to include it on your giving statement and consider it as giving towards your annual pledge, or we can direct it someplace other than the general fund if you make that designation.

Blood Drive a Success—Thank you!

The first ever LCH blood drive brought in 21 people who were able to give, plus six people who were deferred on that day. Our goal for the September 18 event was 25 people, so the Blood Bank team was very pleased with the effort. They registered eight new donors and had five walk-ins, even one from the community who saw the sign and came to donate.

The field representative from Blood Bank Hawai‘i wrote a note saying, “This is outstanding! So proud of our first lifesaving effort! The Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s contribution impacts 60 lives right here in Hawai‘i!” The blood drive was LCH’s contribution to the ELCA wide “God’s work. Our hands.” day of service. Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves to give.

Next steps for Called Forward Together in Christ

Thank you to all of the people who provided such valuable input in the Called Forward Together in Christ sessions over the summer. The discussions were stimulating and the ideas free flowing. The following are the ideas the Church Council recommends LCH move forward on:

• Stephen Ministry group—Stephen Ministry provides training for members of the congregation to offer quality one on one Christian care to people in need. This is a formal program that equips people to lend a helping hand with people going through difficult times in life, whether that be job loss, divorce, illness, or the death of a family member.
   
  The commitment to Stephen Ministry would be a significant one for LCH, but it generated a great deal of interest. In order to learn more, the Council will organize a forum with members of Calvary by the Sea, which has an active Stephen Ministry group. This meeting will be held in November. Please stay tuned for more information.
• Bringing community to LCH—There was also a lot of interest in a variety of events that would open up the campus to the community. These involved ideas from a Halloween party to clothes drives to a book exchange. The Council is supportive of these ideas and will consider how to put these plans in place for 2017. One critical element of these events will be involving the members of the congregation who are passionate about these events.
   
  One way to bring community to LCH will be to reactivate the Concert Committee. Several people are willing to help with this and we will ask them to move forward under the guidance of Pastor Jeff and Scott Fiske.
• Logo wear—An interested group will be given permission to move forward with logo wear for church members.
• Youth programs—There was a lot of discussion around youth programs and if there was a need or desire for additional staffing to handle these needs. Pastor Jeff will organize a meeting of the youth and their parents during the first quarter of 2017 to discuss what might be next for our youth.

The Council would like to thank the people who stepped forward with their ideas. We will now be asking for volunteers to help us make certain that we move forward together with Christ.

Anticipating a Big Celebration: 500th Anniversary

The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the traditional beginning of the Lutheran movement that started in Wittenberg, Germany with the nailing of Luther’s 95 Theses to the door of that town’s church. The period, known as the Reformation, was inaugurated and its effects spread worldwide. Now we ask what our congregation can do to honor and celebrate that rich heritage? Ideas are already circulating, but there is certainly room for more. More definite plans will be elaborated after the first of the year. Meanwhile, let your own creative imagination suggest some activity or project that seems fitting for such a celebration.
