First Mondays Chamber Concerts—2021–2022 Season

Bach Chamber orchestra membersAt Lutheran Church of Honolulu we believe the arts hold a special place in our community. In support of both local performers and concert-goers, we’re continuing our concert series, launched last year, that features a free concert on the first Monday of each month. The series programms outstanding chamber works that are often overlooked by other organizations, giving voice to intimate works for the enjoyment of the community.

Given the current state of covid-19 infections in Honolulu, the season will begin with streaming concerts (available on the LCH Facebook page and our own streaming page). We hope to transition to hybrid concerts with limited in-person attendance as conditions permit and are committed to resuming in-person concerts when it is safe to do so.

2021–2022 Season Program

September 6, 2020 • 7:00 pm     La Camera e la Chiesa
Enjoy the masterful quartet of Darel Stark (violin), Aris Doike (’cello), and Alex Hayashi (oboe), with continuo by Katherine Crosier in a concert of notable sonatas and suites from baroque Italy, Germany, and England.

October 4, 2021 • 7:00 pm Art and Song in Vienna
Any list of the greatest composers of art song would be sorely incomplete without the names Brahms, Mozart, and Schubert. These three musical giants, who spent much of their lives in Vienna, Austria, will be featured prominently in a performance that blends the visual art of that time and place with some of their most enchanting compositions for solo voice or small ensemble.

November 1, 2021 • 7:00 pm Bold and Brassy
While the modern brass quintet has only been around since the 1940s, a wealth of compositions has developed, ranging from the obvious bold and energetic works that horns are known for to the more tender and subtle repertoire these instruments are beautifully capable of playing. The stellar ensemble of Zachary Silberschlag (trumpet), Casey Tamanaha (trumpet), Marie Lickwar (horn), Jason Byerlotzer (trombone), and TJ Ricer (tuba) will present an evening of outstanding music for brass quintet featuring both “classical” works and popular songs on the lighter side.

December 6, 2021 • 7:00 pm Morgan State University Singers
While classical, Gospel, and contemporary popular music comprise the Morgan Singers’ repertoire; the choir is noted for its emphasis on preserving the heritage of the spiritual, especially in the historic practices of performance. The Morgan State University Choir has performed for audiences throughout the United States and all over the world—including Virgin Islands, Canary Islands, Canada, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Join us for a rare opportunity to hear this outstanding choir during their spring tour to the islands.

January 3, 2022 • 7:00 pm Jacob Scharfman in Concert
Join us for a livestream concert featuring the wildly talented baritone Jacob Scharfman. Mr. Scharfman is a classically-trained American baritone performing opera, concert, and song repertoire. Mr. Scharfman has prepared a concert for our audience featuring the works of Mozart, Ravel, Bach, Tchaikovsky, and others.

February 7, 2022 • 7:00 pm 545 Express Reunited
When Glenn Ellington (baritone), Eric Faris (tenor), Scott Fikse (bass), and Ian Kelly (tenor) embarked with the Celebrity Constellation in 2011 to entertain international audiences as a resident a cappella group, little did they know that their friendship and love of singing together would endure over 10 years later. Join 545 Express, the “a cappella sensation of Celebrity Cruises” for a much-anticipated reunion concert. Audiences will be delighted by their diverse repertoire of barbershop, contemporary a cappella, jazz, and show tunes.

April 4, 2022 • 7:00 pm BYU–Hawai‘i Hoʻolōkahi Chamber Choir
Formed in 1985, the BYU–Hawai‘i Hoʻolōkahi Chamber Choir is the university’s premier SATB ensemble. The choir performs a cappella and accompanied choral literature ranging from classical oratorio literature to international folk music; American musical theater selections; and art music of Europe, the Americas, and the South Pacific. Performances frequently incorporate traditional Hawaiian numbers, captivating crowds with customary dances and a variety of accompanying instruments. Lutheran Church of Honolulu is proud to welcome this outstanding choir under the direction of visiting professor Erica Glenn.

May 23, 2022 • 7:00 pm   NEW DATE A Scandinavian Pilgrimage
The classical music world is well accustomed to the music of Germany, Austria, Italy, and France while Scandinavian music, on the other hand, isn’t as often associated with the golden age of music. Notable Scandinavian composers were often influenced by local nature, the constantly changing weather, and local religious beliefs. Composers like Grieg, Sibelius, and Nielson were known for creating moods of simplicity, minimalism, calmness, meditation, and even a kind of detachment from the world in their work. Join us for vocal and instrumental pieces of Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish origin.
