New Mural to Tell the Story of LCH

one of the visioning sessionsDuring May we will conclude the process leading to a mural that will describe our congregation—our community, our mission, and our ministry—through images.

On Saturday, April 18, we began preparing the wall facing Punahou Street and the space in front of it for the mural. The bushes and the letters with our name were removed. Later the wall was pressure-washed and then primed for painting, and new lighting was installed.

Beginning Sunday, April 27, members of the LCH ‘ohana gathered for visioning sessions to determine the design of the mural. Guided by our belief that “God works in mysterious ways,” each of the three visioning sessions began with Estria Miyashiro of the Estria Foundation (estria.org) sharing stories about our location within the pae ‘āina (archipelego), followed by meditation to help individuals surface ideas for the mural and sharing the images and colors that came to them.

Estria is now working through all the ideas from the visioning sessions, and on May 3, he will present the mural design to the congregation during regular 10:00 am worship. We will be able to see how the proposed design visually articulates our faith community to our neighbors. The Council will meet briefly after the service to approve the design. The congregation is welcome to share their thoughts with council members before the council’s meeting after worship.

After the sketch approval, Estria will be begin outlining the mural at 6:00 in the evening on Monday, May 4. Everyone, including youth, are invited to join in the painting. There will be sign-up sheets for 2-hour blocks. Each block will accommodate a maximum on 20 volunteer painters and 4–6 helper volunteers. Painting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Wednesday, May 6, from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The blessing and unveiling will take place during worship on Sunday, May 10 at about 11:30 am.

Monday, May 4 • 7:00 pm

Lei Day embodies the spirit of aloha, with each lei representing the heartfelt connection between giver and receiver. The creation of a lei—through the gathering of materials, preparation, and weaving—is infused with the mana, or spirit, of its maker. Join us for this concert, the culmination of a weekend of cultural events! The concert features Abe Lagrimas, Jr., on the ʻukulele and Shawn Conley on the bass.

All are welcome to gather for pūpū and conversation in the Hörmann Courtyard at 6:15 pm. First Mondays Concerts are free, with a suggested donation of $20.

Mahalo to the LCH ‘ohana for your continued support. This month’s calabash offerings will benefit the East-West Center.

From Pastor Lesley

We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.—1 Thessalonians 1:2–3

As my time with you is coming to a close, I echo Paul’s sentiments. I give thanks to God and to you for the privilege to have accompanied you this past year during this transitional and transformational time. We have had the privilege together to proclaim the Gospel in word and deed.

We have welcomed four people into God’s family through the sacrament of Baptism. We have welcomed 10 people into membership in our faith community. We have celebrated 125 years of God’s faithful presence in, with, and among our LCH faith community. We have lived God’s message of inclusivity and welcome in worship, in participation in the Pride Parade, and in many other ways. We have stood up to power that would choose to oppress. We have dreamed, prayed, cried, laughed, served, and eaten together. We have welcomed the greater community especially through the First Mondays Concerts and have expanded that venue to include care for our neighbor through the Music in Mission program. We have produced more bulletins, eNews, letters, recycled paper, etc. than I can count.

There are so many more things to list that we have done together this year, as we have been siblings in Christ doing God’s work with our hands. Out of all of things we have done together, there are two things that I count myself so blessed to be able to do with you-preside at Holy Communion and pray with and for you.

The Easter Vigil procession enters the courtyard. The Easter Vigil procession enters the courtyard.

I feel so honored to be able to tell you weekly how much God loves you and feed you a reminder of his sacrifice and love. As I look into your eyes and hand you the bread, I am overwhelmed by the depth of God’s love for God’s world. Each week I get to tell and show you the depth of God’s love. I am in awe of that opportunity. Thank you for that privilege.

One of the most tender moments of my ministry is when I pray with someone. You have welcomed me to share prayers with you through many parts of your life-celebration, challenges, loss, ordinary times, and many more. Thank you for receiving my words as petitions to God on your behalf.

I hope when you think about our time together, you remember these things:

  • Jesus loves you—always and forever!
  • All are welcome in God’s world, and there is always a place at God’s table for everyone.
  • Courage is fear that has said its prayers. Keep praying.
  • Prayer and a good “bad dad joke” helps, especially on a tough day.
  • I will always hold you in my heart and prayers. We are forever siblings in Christ.
  • Don’t forget to hug each other, and you can even add an extra hug for me.
  • Remember through the power of the Holy Spirit, amazing things can happen as you live your life as a witness to God’s love, mercy, and grace.
  • Live wet. Use your rubber duckie as a reminder to live your baptismal covenant.
  • And one more time for good measure—Jesus loves you, and so do I.

With thanks, love, and prayers,
Pastor Lesley

Mahalo to the Call Committee

Do not remember the former things or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth; do you not perceive it?—Isaiah 43:18-19

Please join me in sharing our mahalo nui loa to the LCH Call Committee. They have been an exemplary team that has done their prayerful work with diligence and discernment. They have identified a candidate that they believe has the God-given gifts needed to partner and lead with LCH as together we grow into God’s preferred and promised future.

We will have the opportunity to meet and greet the pastoral candidate on Saturday, June 13th. June 14th, after worship, there will be a congregational meeting to vote on issuing a call to the candidate. More details about the weekend events will be coming soon. For now, please just put a Save the Date on your calendar for June 13th and June 14th.

These are exciting times in the life of Lutheran Church of Honolulu as we look forward to preparing to call our 12th congregationally-called pastor in 125 years. Please join me in prayer as we walk into this new future that God will provide for us.

In preparation to receive our new congregationally called pastor, we will be saying aloha to Pr. Lesley. She will begin serving as interim pastor at Kīhei Lutheran Church, Kīhei, Maui, on June 7th. Her last Sunday with us will be May 31st. While we are transitioning from an interim pastor to a congregationally-called pastor, the Synod will be helping to identify pastoral coverage for us. The Synod will let us know pastoral coverage plans very soon.

Again, thank you for your faithfulness in doing God’s work with our hands. Thank you for holding this process, the people in transition and our church ʻohana in your prayers.

If you have any questions, please contact me at tmccreary24@gmail.com or connect with me at church.

Mahalo, prayers, and blessings,
Dr. Teresa McCreary, LCH Council President

Help Feed Our Neighbors!

Join an IHS Sandwich-Making Team

Every month a team of LCH members and friends meets to prepare and deliver 375 sandwich lunch sacks for the Institute for Human Services (IHS). The task from start to finish takes about 1.5 hours. It’s a time for enjoyable fellowship and fast action as we serve our neighbors.

Please consider this invitation to join the ministry of feeding the houseless in Honolulu. IHS faces the demanding task of providing meals for hundreds of people each day. They depend on LCH, and other churches, to provide meals like sack lunches. The lunches not only feed people, but they also provide a breather for the kitchen staff at IHS. There are two teams, so the commitment is only for a few hours every other month.

If your schedule won’t accommodate a monthly commitment, please consider being an on-call backup. Let the LCH office know of your interest, or contact Carol Langner or any of the team members you may know. Sincere thanks to all.

Raising Funds for Our New Pastor’s Recruitment and Relocation

The congregation voted at the annual meeting to raise $30,000 to pay for the recruitment and relocation of our new pastor.

To raise the funds, we are going to solicit donations from members and friends for a total of $20,000 and hold a silent auction and ice cream social on June 13 to raise the remaining $10,000. The funds will be used to: bring the selected candidate out for a visit and interview and cover the relocation costs for the person who will be selected to lead LCH as our pastor

How can you donate?

  • Online—Go to www.lchwelcome.org/donate/, click on the yellow Donate button on the top right hand side of the page, and choose “Pastoral Search and Relocation” from the dropdown menu.
  • By check—Make your check payable to the Lutheran Church of Honolulu, put “Pastoral Search and Relocation” in the memo line, and put it in the offering or mail to LCH at 1730 Punahou St., Honolulu, HI, 96822.

How can you participate in the silent auction on June 13? We are soliciting donations from congregation members and friends to help create a night of fellowship and fun on June 13. The event will begin at 4:00 pm, so there will be time to view the elements in the auction in the daylight. Items need to have a minimum value of $20 retail. We are asking for donations of services, artwork, or new or very-gently-used items. We love the idea of handmade items. Here are some examples:

  • Artwork of any sort—Handmade items, such as stained glass, quilts, woodwork, photographs (mounted), artwork, crocheted items
  • Food items can be delivered at a date determined by the provider and the purchaser, such as beef stew, bread baked on a schedule, or desserts for a party
  • Services coordinated between provider and purchaser, such as technology services, car detailing, or music provided for a special occasion.
  • Travel opportunities. Do you know someone with a vacation home or timeshare who would donate it for a week? Or can you check with your airline carrier to see how you can give miles to someone else?

Please talk to Mary Fastenau, mfastenau@gmail.com, for additional questions. Items for the silent auction will be stored at church in the Ramp Room. Other committee members are Roy Helms, Nicki Mundell, Bill Potter, and Paula Wheeler.

Stewardship Corner

Creation Care II

For Lutherans, caring for the environment is a profoundly spiritual calling. We witness God’s goodness in creation and believe we are entrusted with the responsibility to act as faithful stewards of the earth.—Lutheran Office for Public Policy in Wisconsin

Most folks would probably call me a tree-hugger year-round, but I become even more so in April and May, the months our church has traditionally reserved to focus on Creation Care. It’s a time when I try to spend more time appreciating the diversity and breathtaking beauty of nature and when I attempt to be a better steward of Creation, hopeful that the extra care I take in these two months might grow into more enduring habits that extend throughout the year.

Changing how we live so that we might lessen the environmental harms we cause is something the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America addressed in a 1993 social statement entitled, “Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope, and Justice.” The document views the environmental crisis as a spiritual matter that is very much connected with how we choose to live our lives. Zion Lutheran Church (Hartford City, IN) describes the social statement this way: it asserts that 1) God created a perfect world, but our sin “corrupts that perfection”; and 2) God’s gift of Creation was intended to provide us with what we need, and, in return, it is our “responsibility to care for, safeguard, and respect the natural world.”

It is with our role as stewards in mind that I’ve arranged a Tour de Trash excursion for the members and friends of LCH on Friday, May 15, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. We need to be at the site before the 9:30 start of the tour, so we will need to leave home or carpool from church earlier than that!

Folks at the Department of Environmental Services (DES) describe the tour this way: “Each tour site offers in-depth insights and live demonstrations of the work being done daily to keep Oʻahu clean, sustainable, and energy-efficient. Whether you’re a student, community advocate, or just curious about where your waste goes, this tour is a valuable learning opportunity.”

Our tour will visit three key sites:

  • RRR Recycling Services—Observe how Oʻahu’s curbside recyclables are sorted and prepped for shipment, including paper, plastics, metals, and glass.
  • H-POWER—Tour Oʻahu’s waste-to-energy facility, where trash is incinerated to generate up to 70 megawatts of power, enough for 60,000 homes.
  • Waimānalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill—Learn about the environmental systems in place at Oʻahu’s only municipal landfill, including leachate collection and methane processing.

“By seeing the process up close, people gain a better understanding of how their choices at home directly impact our environment,” said Roger Babcock, DES director. And hopefully, the knowledge we gain from seeing what happens to our solid waste will help us better fulfill our role as caring stewards of our fragile planet. VIA Social Justice Ministry

Thursdays at 6:00 pm • In-person, online link available by request

Values In Action (VIA) was formed to create space for meaningful connection, thoughtful engagement, and tangible service. As part of our church’s broader mission, VIA is dedicated to identifying unmet needs in our community and organizing ways to respond through outreach, education, and partnership.

Our early focus has been on civic engagement as a form of community care. Ensuring that people have access to information, opportunities to participate, and a voice in the systems that shape our lives is paramount to living fully and authentically in this world.

So far, we have: held a postcard-making event encouraging people in communities facing voter suppression to vote, created and distributed voter registration materials across our communities, organized a voter registration drive on UH Mānoa’s campus, and planned a town hall public forum to connect community members with local state representatives.

VIA is open to anyone who feels called to connect, serve, or learn. You can get involved by:

  • Signing up for the email list, which sends out weekly meeting notes, and includes optional “group action items” for small asynchronous ways you can help
  • Contributing ideas for future projects and initiatives
  • Helping with outreach, including distributing flyers or sharing information online
  • Attending larger community events, such as letter-writing campaigns or community support projects
  • Volunteering at events, such as voter registration drives or community forums
  • Attending weekly meetings, online or in-person, to help direct the planning and organization of future events

Whether you have a few hours to give or simply a desire to stay informed, there is a place for you in this work. If you’ve been looking for a way to get involved, to meet others, or to put your values into practice, we invite you to join us.

We meet Thursdays at 6:00 pm in the Boardroom, or virtually by request. Please contact LJ Friedman at ljfried@hawaii.edu with any questions.

Historic Communion Set Rediscovered and Returned to Use

The refurbished communion setThe very old communion set used by Pr. Phyllis Hörmann’s grandfather, Pr. Aurthur Hörmann, who served LCH from 1916 to 1946, through two world wars, and helped our congregation transition from German to English worship, was recently rediscovered. Using this communion set, he visited and took communion to members but also to marginalized people including those with Hansen’s disease waiting for passage to Moloka‘i and also a prostitute in downtown Honolulu. Phyllis’ aunt Irmgard shared these stories of his visits with Phyllis’ brother David in the years that he cared for her.

Pr. Phyllis recounts that “the set was found the first time (that we know of) by Pastor Barber, who showed it to David and our aunt Irmgard. It stayed tucked away another while in the pastor’s office. Jeff was aware of it and had wanted to craft a new wooden container for it and return it to our family but, per Jean, never got around to it. Its original container had fallen apart. When Margrethe found it as she cleaned out the office for the next pastor, she must have shown it to Olivia who wanted to get it re-silvered. She called me to ask whether I knew of any place where that could be done. I knew of Armbruster Jewelers down the hill from us where our aunt had some of her silver things re-silvered. Mr. Armbruster beautifully re-silvered the delicate set and did not charge for the silver, just for the labor. I stopped by not too long ago to thank him in person. I had sent a note with a picture of it in the new box. Olivia must have talked to Barry Wheeler or Paula about making a box. Barry happened to have some koa wood he could use and so crafted a beautiful box, and Randy Castro has now lined the inside, both top and bottom, with purple velvet.”

The box was presented to Pr. Phyllis in March. A week later, she visited Pr. Don Johnson and put the newly refurbished set to its intended use. She used it again when visiting the Satos about a week later and not long after that when she visited Chuck Pearson and Josie Bidgood.

Thanks from the Hawai‘i Foodbank

On behalf of Hawaiʻi Foodbank, I want to express our sincere gratitude for Lutheran Church of Honolulu’s generous gift of $5,000.00 designated for Disaster Relief. Your support is essential as we work to ensure that all our families and neighbors—from keiki to kūpuna—have access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food at all times.

As Hawaiʻi’s largest hunger relief organization, Hawaiʻi Foodbank is working diligently to establish long-term food security for our communities—both in daily life and in times of emergency. Together, with our extraordinary network of more than 250 hunger relief partners, thousands of dedicated volunteers and generous supporters like you, last year we provided food for nearly 21.4 million meals to an average of 183,000 people each month. Nearly one-third of all food distributed was fresh, healthy produce.

If you have any questions, please contact me at 808-954-7880 or amy@hawaiifoodbank.org. Mahalo for joining us in our mission. Together—when we nourish our ʻohana today—we can end hunger tomorrow.

With appreciation,
Amy Miller, President and CEO
