Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 26—September 29, 2019

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the story of a rich man and a poor man who lay outside the rich man’s gate. They both die, and the poor man ends up and heaven and the rich man in Hades. The story is telling us what happens when people think only about money and don’t see the people around them. God gives us everything we need, so we are rich in God and can see all the people around us who God loves.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 25—September 22, 2019

Preacher: Pastor Steve Jensen
Summary: When I was young, I got an allowance of a quarter each week, so today I have a quarter for each of you. But there were rules for me: I had to give ten cents to the offering at church each week and put ten cents in the bank. I saved the nickel that was left in a piggy bank to buy important thing, but I also kept money I got for my birthday, and I saved other important things I got. Let me show you a few. Here are Bible coins, like the tiny widow’s mite that Jesus talked about. Another treasure I have is this portable communion set so I can take communion to people who can’t come to church. What are you doing to do with the quarter I gave you? How can you use that for God’s kingdom?

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 22—September 1, 2019

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Please line up according to height. Now arrange yourself by first name; now by age. The world arranges us in different ways and has its own idea about who is first. In our Gospel, Jesus talks about being humble and not going for the highest place at a banquet. In God’s love, each f you is the greatest because God loves each of you very, very much. God also tells us to love one another, so we also see each other as the greatest.

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus heals a woman who has been bent over for many years. We can begin to imagine how painful it was for her to live for all those years by walking around the church bent over. Jesus sees her suffering and heals her, so she praises God. But the religious leaders complain because Jesus healed her on the Sabbath. We know that the Sabbath is a day for us to meet God, and the woman meets God in her healing. God meets us all the time and brings us blessings.

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: I’m sure you noticed that you’re sitting in a different place today. Are you comfortable? Many of us don’t like change. In today’s Gospel, the people don’t respond well when Jesus asks them to change. But Jesus promises to be with us no matter what. Sometimes we just need a change in perspective, and Jesus is always with us.

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today’s Gospel talks about treasure, so we’re going to hunt for the great treasure we have from God, grace. Where do you think we can find it? You’re right: in the baptismal font, in the piano, in the Bible, in the oil and communion on the altar, and in the door of the church. There is grace everywhere we look and in all these people. The grace of God is a great treasure.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 18—August 4, 2019

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about stuff. If you could have a whole lot of one thing, what would it be? I’d want chocolate. But Jesus tells the story of a man whose warehouses were full of stuff, so he was very happy. We all know people like that. But he died that night, so it was worth nothing to him. Loving and caring for one another and worshipping together are what is really important. We may not have warehouses full of stuff, but we have a warehouse full of God’s love.
