Palm Sunday—March 20, 2016

Lessons: Luke 19:28–40 | Isaiah 50:4–9a | Psalm 31:9–16 | Luke 22:14—23:56

Singing of the Passion Gospel—no sermon

Lent V—March 13, 2016

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Isaiah 43:16–21 | Psalm 126 | Philippians 3:4b–14 | John 12:1–8
Summary: In today’s Gospel, Mary pours perfume on Jesus’ feet, and Judas complains. John’s Gospel portrays Judas in a bad light in this story, but many of us would be the same way. We like what is old. Tradition is wonderful, but it can get in the way of God doing new things. The message of John’s Gospel is that God is doing a new thing. May we have hearts and eyes and ears to perceive what God is up to and to join with the Spirit at work in the world.

Lent IV—March 6, 2016

Preacher: Pastor J. P. Sabbithi
Lessons: Joshua 5:9–12 | Psalm 32 | 2 Corinthians 5:16–21 | Luke 15:1–3, 11b–32
Summary: Today’s Gospel parable of the prodigal son is very familiar. It comes with two other parables about being lost and found. The son goes though stages of family living, dissolute living, worthless living, and transformed living. When we return to God in Christ, we can share in transformed living. We experience the banquet of the prodigal at the communion table.

Lent III—February 28, 2016

Preacher: Pastor Phyllis Hormann
Lessons: Isaiah 55:1–9 | Psalm 63:1–8 | 1 Corinthians 10:1–13 | Luke 13:1–9
Summary: It’s easy to go through life and be distracted by things that are not all that important. In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls the people to repent and turn to God. God seeks us out and calls us back. What will we do with our time? Will we be caught off guard, or will we bear fruit? Let us heed Jesus’ call to turn around, attend to the things that do matter, and seek God.

Lent II—February 21, 2016

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Genesis 15:1–12, 17–18 | Psalm 27 | Philippians 3:17—4:1 | Luke 13:31–35
Summary: In last week’s Gospel, Jesus was not tempted by power, fame, and riches; and in today’s Gospel, he does not let the threat that Herod will kill him keep him from his mission. We live in a world fixated on power and status, but God takes the path of weakness and vulnerability and comes as a child. In Lent, we are called to pray, and watch, and wait in weakness and vulnerability.

Lent I—February 14, 2016

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Deuteronomy 26:1–11 | Psalm 91:1–2, 9–16 | Romans 10:8b–13 | Luke 4:1–13
Summary: Today’s Gospel tells of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. The devil offers food, and power, and fame, but Jesus is completely full of the love of God and does not need any of those. Our world always tries to make us feel need for things, and power, and fame. When we, like Jesus, are filled with God’s love through prayer and the power of the Spirit, we can pour ourselves out for the world from that place of abundance.
