Maundy Thursday—April 6, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Bree Lloyd
Lessons: Exodus 12:1–14 | Psalm 116:1–2, 12–19 | 1 Corinthians 11:23–26 | John 13:1–17, 31b–35
Summary: I am reading “Hawai‘i’s Story by Hawai‘i’s Queen,” and I cannot help but see parallels to the story of Jesus’ betrayal that we remember this week. In tonight’s Gospel, Jesus tells commands the disciples to love one another. During her trial, Lili‘uokalani asked God to bless Hawai‘i with forbearance and forgiveness. She risked losing everything to gain her soul. We are called to the work of repairing our broken world and loving all.

Palm Sunday—April 2, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Matthew 21:1-11 | Isaiah 50:4–9a | Psalm 31:9–16 | Philippians 2:5–11 | Matthew 26:14—27:66
Summary: Our Palm Sunday Gospel is full of action signaling that something important is about to happen. The procession leads the people to ask who Jesus is. How do we answer this question? Our parade today may end in crucifixion, but God doesn’t end there. Love lives.

Fifth Sunday in Lent—March 26, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Ezekiel 37:1–14 | Psalm 130 | Romans 8:6–11 | John 11:1–45
Summary: Today’s first lesson tells the story of Ezekiel and the dry bones, and in our Gospel we hear about Lazarus being raised from the dead. We cannot program or strategize ourselves out of our dry bones. We must hear the word of God and respond when Jesus calls us out of the tomb.

Fourth Sunday in Lent—March 19, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Bree Lloyd
Lessons: 1 Samuel 16:1–13 | Psalm 23 | Ephesians 5:8–14 | John 9:1–41
Summary: Pauli Murray, one of many different leaders of the civil right movement, experienced discrimination because of the way people perceived their gender and race. The lives of people like Pauli Murray show how the world sees differently from the way God sees the world. Each of us in our own way is, like Pauli Murray, a child of destiny because of the work God calls us to.

Third Sunday in Lent—March 12, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Exodus 17:1–7 | Psalm 95 | Romans 5:1–11 | John 4:5–42
Summary: Today’s lessons relate stories about water. The Israelites are thirsty in the desert, and God brings forth water from the rock. Jesus asks the woman at the well for a drink, and she ends up asking for living water. This is the longest conversation Jesus has in John’s Gospel and the only time Jesus says he is the Messiah. Jesus meets the woman where she is and offers her living water. In the same way, Jesus meets us where we are and in our greatest need and gives us want for ourselves and to give away. Do we have the courage to go to the well of our greatest need, to drink deeply of that living water, and then to bring others to drink.

Second Sunday in Lent—March 5, 2023—March 5, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Genesis 12:1–4a | Psalm 121 | Romans 4:1–5, 13–17 | Matthew 17:1–9
Summary: Today’s Gospel tells the story of Nicodemus’ visit to Jesus ending in the familiar statement of God’s love for the world and sending Jesus to save us. Since God loves and embraces all of creation, we can live with passion and care for our neighbors.

First Sunday in Lent—February 26, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Bree Lloyd
Lessons: Genesis 2:15–17; 3:1–7 | Psalm 32 | Romans 5:12–19 | Matthew 4:1–11
Summary: The reminder of our mortality on Ash Wednesday can lead us to examine our lives and question the kind of life we lead. We have the potential for both good and evil within us, but as Christians, we know that God has entered the world in Christ, making holy bodies of all races, genders, abilities, and orientations. We long for God to come into bodies that turn down power, help others, and trust in God. In this messy world, we have each other, and God is with us.

Ash Wednesday—February 22, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Joel 2:1–2, 12-17 | Psalm 51:1–17 | 2 Corinthians 5:20b–6:10 | Matthew 6:1–6, 16–21
Summary: This evening we begin our Lenten journey—one that many see as strange. The things that Jesus tells us in today’s Gospel apply to every day of the year, but many of us seem more comfortable with what Jesus tells us not to do. God seeks to draw us into a relationship in which we are not the center. Let us all store up treasures in heaven of love and care for the world. Then our eyes will open and light shines in.
