Making Worship Home

When the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions began in March, few of us imagined that we would still be worshipping online in September! Most of us long to return to in-person worship. We miss seeing one another, praying together, and swapping stories over snacks in the courtyard. At the same time, we have also come to find a unique rhythm of spirituality in our online worship.

Some in our community struggle (both literally and figuratively!) to connect online, and yet others simply do not have the technology to do so. We are constantly looking for new ways to connect with one another as the Body of Christ, and we appreciate your patience and commitment to the LCH community as we navigate this unfamiliar ground. As always, we remain grounded in worship, and we hope we can continue to grow in our worship practice. Even if we cannot worship in person, God abides with us and makes a home with us wherever we may find ourselves.

Online worship, whether you tune in live or take in the service at a later time, can be a deeply meaningful experience. Ritual, symbol, and reverence can be as much a part of home worship as it is in church. You may want to consider setting aside a particular time and place in your home for worship. You could choose a special table cloth or, if you have children, ask them to decorate a white sheet with crayon or paint to serve as your “altar cloth.” (Even if you don’t have children, have fun making an altar cloth yourself!)

On Sundays, when we celebrate online communion, set your table with wine or grape juice in a special vessel, and have some bread set aside for this holy meal. You might consider placing a candle in the center of your table to be lit just before worship begins. You could just as easily do all of this on a picnic blanket on the floor. The order of worship is available each week for your use so that you may participate as fully as you like. You may feel a bit silly at first, but feel free to sing the hymns in full voice! Your neighbors might think you a bit odd, but that is half the fun. We are often unable to publish the music for hymns due to copyright restrictions. If you do not have an ELW at home, you can order one from Augsburg Fortress for $24.99, or we would be happy to loan one to you for the duration. If you have a Facebook account, feel free to greet one another and share messages of encouragement during worship.

These are just a few suggestions to spark some creative thinking about how to help make worship at home your worship home. Be creative! We would love for you to send a picture of your home worship space to be included on the LCH Facebook page. Perhaps your picture will inspire others to find deep, meaningful, fun, and creative ways to make a worship home.

Earlier in the article I mentioned online communion. Following the guidance of our presiding bishop and our synodical bishop, the leadership at LCH chose to fast from communion until we could break the fast together in person. Again, none of us imagined that we might not be able to gather in person for months on end. New guidance from our bishop encourages us to share the holy meal in ways that best serve our communities while remaining faithful to our understanding of the sacrament. Under recommendations from the worship committee, the congregational council has approved online communion for our congregation. Holy Communion will be included in our worship on the last Sunday of each month beginning in September. We will maintain our fast from communion at other times for the time being. We recognize that the meal is God’s meal, and the holiness of the meal remains God’s gift wherever it is shared. We rejoice that we will once again be united in the sacrament, even if we cannot be gathered in person to receive it.

As I write this, I received news that the city and county have tightened restrictions and reinstituted stay at home orders. LCH staff and volunteers have been diligent in following all guidelines and recommendations from the City and County as well as the CDC and the State Health Department. Please be assured that everyone participating in LCH livestream worship is taking full precautions. As mandated, singers are keeping physical distance, wearing masks, washing hands, and using sanitizing gel as recommended. Production staff are now separated from the singers and one another by plexiglass panels, and are taking all the same precautions. While we are committed to bringing you the Word of God in worship, safety is our first priority.

Over the next few weeks, you will notice more pre-recorded segments in our worship. Scott Fiske, our music director, and Marcus Fikse, our stalwart video director, will be taking some much-needed vacation, necessitating some changes to our worship patterns. Jean (video production) and I will be headed to the mainland in October to meet our first grandchild. We ask for your patience and understanding while staff gets some rest. We are ever-so-thankful for those of you who have helped with worship or taken time to record the reading and prayers of intercession these past months!

Lastly, thank you for your support and commitment during these difficult times. Although we are not all driven by numbers, it is heartening to see so many of you tuning in for worship on Sundays and throughout the week. Although the technology occasionally fails, you have been gracious in your response, and your tenaciousness and faith have not gone unnoticed! Please remember to tune in each Sunday for Sunday school, adult forum, worship, and coffee fellowship. Don’t forget, Compline will resume in September on the first and third Sundays of the month.

Blessings,
Pastor Jeff

Welcome Brianna Lloyd!

On September 1, Lutheran Church of Honolulu will welcome Intern Pastor Brianna Llyod for a one-year, full-time internship. Vicar Bree is a “terminal year intern,” meaning that at the end of her internship she will be eligible for call to a congregation. During her year at LCH, she will have the opportunity to experience the full range of pastoral duties, including worship leadership, pastoral care, teaching, youth ministry, administration, stewardship, and finance. In addition, she will undertake an internship project of her own choice. This internship will be somewhat unique given the pandemic. Many of your interactions with Vicar Bree will be via phone, Zoom, or other technology. Pastoral care, committee meetings, and even personal interactions will require some intentionality and care to make this the best experience possible. LCH is a great community in which to learn and develop pastoral skills and a healthy pastoral identity. Please remember, Vicar Bree is a student who is learning all the time. At the same time, we will learn a great deal from her as she brings her unique gifts to bear on God’s ministry through LCH. I pray you will welcome Vicar Bree with your customary enthusiasm and joy!

There are some practical matters I would like to share. Vicar Bree has a lay committee with whom she will meet monthly. The initial committee members include Mary Fastenau, Bobby Broyles, Hunter Nishimura, and Olivia Arnold. Vicar Bree will have the opportunity to add one or more other members over the next several weeks as she gets to know our community. The lay committee serves as a sounding board for the vicar, but does not have a supervisory role.

Many of you have asked about housing and office furnishings. Bree is already on-island and has an established home. At this point, she does not need any additional household goods, but she will let you know if there are any needs. She has decided to share an office with me so that she can be “in the mix” a bit more on days when we are able to be in the office.

Finally, I hope you will all join us online Sunday, September 6, at 10:00 am for Vicar Bree’s installation!

Aloha from Vicar Bree

Aloha, LCH community!

Vicar Brianna LloydI very much look forward to joining you in a short week. It is quite an interesting time to begin a new position, a unique Covinternship perhaps. Whatever the challenges and the possibilities, I look forward to being a part of the LCH community, in spite of the distance. I know I have big shoes to follow, particularly after IPA (Intern Pastor Andy). But I find solace in the fact that my shortened name (Bree), too, rearranged spells Beer. So, For Beer and the Bible, I believe this is providential. It is a good sign.

A little about myself: I have recently finished a year-long chaplain residency program, serving as a chaplain at a long-term care facility and retirement community in Kāne’ohe. It was a very dear year, and I learned so much from the people there. Before this, I spent one year in Chicago, learning all things Lutheran at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. I did not grow up Lutheran, so I met Lutheran theology and ritual with wide-eyed wonder and fresh eyes.

Prior to this, I graduated with an MDiv from Yale Divinity School, where I focused much of my attention on the conversation of religion and ecology. And still before these years of study, I spent about five years working on various small farms across the Midwest—a vegetable farm in Minnesota, a dairy farm in Wisconsin, and two alpaca farms in Indiana. I even spent a long five years prior to this writing my own graduate degree in sustainable agriculture and care ethics at the University of Minnesota. Whew—what a journey, staring for hours uninspired at an empty page. But I finished!

I love combining head and heart and physical work wherever I am, and I have a vocational desire to join the resurrection of the divine-land ethic, which flows through particularly the Hebrew scriptures (and in so many other faith and living traditions). I believe it is a legacy that has been lost or long neglected in the Western world, and it is very much needed in our times.

I grew up in a small town in rural Ohio that has had the same population for the past 150 years—around 360. I am not sure how to explain that mystery. Though I very much miss the landscape of my homeland—the smell of pine and oak, the twirr of blackbirds, the spring sound of chickadees and the call of crows—I have settled into the deep and unique beauty of Hawai‘i. It is deeply home for my fiancée. I only hope I can be responsible, as a newcomer, to the beauty that is given and the people who have long called Hawai‘i home.

I look forward to meeting each of you, to talking story and hearing of yours, to joining your ministry of welcome, of faith tradition ancient and new, of history and music. I have so much to learn, and I look forward to sharing the faith and life journey with you for a time.

Brianna (Bree)

LCH Office Hours During COVID-19 Shelter-at-Home Order

The LCH office and church campus are generally closed to in-person meetings and gatherings as cases of covid-19 in the state continue to rise an as a precaution in accordance with the CDC, Hawai‘i State Governor’s Office, and Honolulu City and County Office of the Mayor’s recommendations regarding covid-19 virus safety. We recommend that you do not leave a phone message on the office voicemail. It is preferable that you please email LCH@LCHwelcome.org to contact the administrator, pr.jeff@LCHwelcome.org to contact Pastor Jeff, or scott@LCHwelcome.org to contact the LCH music director. If you prefer to leave a brief voicemail message, your call will be returned when someone is able to check in at the LCH office. Stewardship Corner

Our LCH tapestryOur LCH tapestry
(click to open a larger version in a new window)

As summer ends we would encourage you to continue to weave self-care into your life. We would like to thank Willow for presenting a class about Yoga—including a few basic exercises—virtually to the Adult Forum. She will be teaching a 4-week class in Restorative Yoga on Thursday evenings in September. See the article later in this issue for more information.

As we move into fall, we look for ways to weave Faith in Our Community. During this time when we may not be able to meet in person, we look for ways to reach out to and care not only for ourselves but also for our community at large. Now more than ever we need to show our stewardship by caring for those around us in every aspect of our daily lives. We hope to begin exploring becoming a Blue Zone. Watch for opportunities to learn more about Blue Zones this fall.

As part of a community, we share the responsibility to find those commonalities that bring us together while celebrating the gifts/differences that make each of us unique. Since we no longer can gather to physically weave our tapestry, we want members to share about an item they wove (or hope to still weave) into our tapestry of Faith? Here’s a tapestry story from a member of our Stewardship Team:

“Several years ago, LCH did a stewardship campaign featuring a Hawaiiana theme, specifically the honu (turtle). During those years, the pledge dedication box was wrapped with lauhala paper decorated with several honu carved from wood. Earlier this year the box was recovered while cleaning out one of the many storage spaces in the church. Someone asked if we should keep the box with its faded and torn paper. No, the box had long since served it purpose, however, I kept the honu thinking that they would be a great addition to the tapestry. I still carry them around in my purse, in hopes that when we can meet again that I will be able to add them to the tapestry. Whenever I see a honu, it reminds me of the stewardship of LCH, the many blessings and the ‘ohana I found here.”—Pam Buckley

We hope you’ll share your tapestry story during worship in the month of September. Just talk with a member of the Stewardship Team, and we’ll work with you to make it happen.

Volunteer Opportunity: LCH Website Team

We all know our website is the face of LCH to people outside of congregation. It tells people who we are and what goes on here, and it provides members of the LCH ‘ohana with information about both what happened in the past and what’s going on this month.

We’re all happy when visitors tell us they found us because of the website, and I hope we’re all proud of its professional appearance and the wealth of information available on the site. For years the LCH website has been my one-man labor of love and, while I’m happy to continue working hard to grow and maintain the site for long-term sustainability, we need to develop a team of several individuals to share the work and ensure continuity. So, I am looking for two or three members from the LCH ‘ohana to join the website team.

Work on the website requires basic knowledge of html, the language of webpages, but that can be taught and is not a prerequisite for joining the website team. What is required are commitment to the mission of LCH, a couple of hours a week that can be devoted to the website, an openness to learning new skills (like html coding), good basic computer skills, and a good internet connection.

If you have any question about what’s involved in being part of the website team or want to volunteer, please contact me at webmaster@lchwelcome.org.

Bill Potter, LCH webmaster

Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund

piano graphicThe church has an ongoing need for maintenance of our current piano, which is on generous loan from Mark Wong. We also need to plan for eventual purchase of an excellent, permanent piano for LCH.

Therefore, we have established the Edward Shipwright Memorial Piano Fund. Dr. Shipwright was the head of the piano division of the Music Department at UH Mānoa. Many people associated with LCH were students or friends of Ed. The fund will be a fitting memorial to his 50 years of teaching and playing.
