Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 25—September 24, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Phyllis Hörmann
Summary: Your parents probably expect you to do chores and maybe give you an allowance. I imagine that if your sister or brother didn’t do their chores but still got their allowance, you’d be upset. Today’s Gospel is a little like that. It shows us that God is generous with us, even when we don’t deserve it.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 23—September 10, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel Jesus says that where two or three are gathered together, Jesus is with us. It can be difficult for people to stick together because we sometimes say or do things that hurt others. When we hold hands, we can move together as a group; but if we don’t hold on, it’s hard. When Jesus is with us and we hold on, we can move together as the church.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 22—September 3, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel Jesus tells the disciples that he will suffer and die, and they are confused because they expect Jesus to become a king. Jesus goes on to say that the more you grab on to life, the more likely you are to lose it, so they are to take their cross and follow. This is not about wearing a cross. It’s more about the cross that you receive at baptism. That cross represents God’s love, and you always have it with you.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 21—August 27, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel Jesus asks the disciples who people say Jesus is. How would you answer that question? We know about Jesus because people have passed down stories about him healing people, teaching, and raising people from the dead. And you know Jesus because Jesus is in each and every one of you.

Preacher: Bishop David Nagler
Summary: I’m your bishop, and I’m happy to be with you this Sunday. As bishop, I get to go around and help people, like the people who suffered in the fire on Maui or those who will suffer from the tropical storm in California. We in the church can help each other, so let’s pray for those people and for everyone here.

Time after Pentecost • Lectionary 18—August 6, 2023

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: Today we read about the feeding of the 5,000. That’s a lot of people. Would you be able to feed the 65 people we have here in church today? Like you, the disciples didn’t think they could do it, but Jesus was able to feed them all with just a little. Jesus’ love is like that; we think there’s not enough, but Jesus has so much love that there’s enough for everyone—even the people we don’t like.
