Day of Pentecost—June 4, 2017

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 2:1–21 | Psalm 104:24–34, 35b | 1 Corinthians 12:3b–13 | John 20:19–23
Summary: When my daughter was born I was terrified and did everything for her. One day I was helping and she turned to me and told me she could do it herself. Pentecost is that kind of crossroads. Jesus had been with the disciples all the time, but at the Ascension he left. Days later the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost to provide the support we need. God has woven us together in the Spirit for one another. Rather than being curved in on ourselves (the literal meaning of the word Paul uses for sin), we need to learn to live together as people and as a planet. We stand ready to do God’s will, and God stands ready to help us.

Easter IV—May 7, 2017

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 2:42–47 | Psalm 23 | 1 Peter 2:19–25 | John 10:1–10
Summary: In today’s Gospel Jesus says he is the gate for the good shepherd to lead the sheep to abundant life. We are surrounded by people telling us what we need to have abundant life and how to buy it on Amazon. But as our confirmation students discovered, people find abundant life in our work, play, love, and more. God calls us to live that abundant life out in every moment and every relationship. We understand that God wants abundant life for everyone and that we are called to help them find the gate.

We expect this sermon to be available soon.

Easter III / Earth Day Sunday—April 30, 2017

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 2:14a, 36–41 | Psalm 116:1–4, 12–19 | 1 Peter 1:17–23 | Luke 24:13–35
Summary: In today’s Gospel we hear how Jesus appears to the disciples on the way to Emmaus. They lost hope when Jesus was crucified, but Jesus opens their eyes in the breaking of bread, and they realize that they are called to carry out God’s mission in the world. We face what seems to be a hopeless situation with regard to climate change, but God calls us to minister to the world in partnership with all creation to renew the face of the earth.

Easter II—April 23, 2017

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 2:14a, 22–32 | Psalm 16 | 1 Peter 1:3–9 | John 20:19–31
Summary: We live in a world where seeing is believing. This is clearly seen in the power of the scientific method to explain the world. Thomas experiences Jesus and has faith. As Christians we believe what science teaches us about the world, and we believe what Jesus shows us in his life about how to live in this world and in our interactions with others.

Easter Sunday—April 16, 2017

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Lessons: Acts 10:34–43 | Psalm 118:1–2, 14–24 | Colossians 3:1–4 | Matthew 28:1–10
Summary: Last week I learned a new word, “compathy.” It means that we feel with another person but are not stirred to action. In Easter we find a God who does not stop with compathy. In the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus we encounter a God who knows us deeply and is moved to action. Like the witnesses of the resurrection who went to tell others, we are sent into the world for the sake of the world
