Transfiguration of Our Lord—February 15, 2015
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: In today’s Gospel, we hear how Jesus was transformed on the mountain. Jesus, Moses, and Elijah were bathed in light, and the voice of God said, “This is my beloved.” Peter wanted to stay there, but Jesus took them back down the mountain. God sometimes does amazing things in our lives, and we may want to hold onto that moment, but we need to go on to do our ministry, knowing that Jesus is stays with us.

Epiphany V—February 8, 2015

Summary: In today’s Gospel, we hear how Jesus heals Simon Peter’s mother-in-law. If you’re sick, you probably don’t get up right away, but she immediately gets up to serve them. The word in the story for “serve” is the same Greek word that gives us the English word “deacon.” This makes me think of footwashing on Maundy Thursday. God calls each of us to be servants and share God’s love with others. I’ve seen you helping othes, and this shows that you are answering God’s call.

Epiphany IV—February 1, 2015

Summary: Here are two similar sounds; which is old, and which is new? In today’s Gospel, Jesus comes to the synagogue, and people are amazed at the new message he brings. You come to church on Sundays, but when was the last time you were amazed? Jesus’ new message told of God’s love for each of us. Listen during the rest of worship to see how often you are amazed by God’s love.

Summary: Sometimes we forget things—even important things like God’s love for us. In today’s Gospel we heard about Jesus calling some of the disciples. God called each of you at your baptism, and to help you remember, come with me to the baptismal font. Now put your finger in, make a cross on your forehead and say, “I am called.” Now I want you to go around to everyone in church, make a cross on each one’s forehead, and say, “You are called.”

Summary: This is an invitation to the installation of the new pastor at St. John Lutheran. You sometimes get invitations to a party, and you’re excited. In today’s first lesson we heard how God invited Samuel to be a prophet. You receive invitations from God at baptism and each Sunday, and that gives you the opportunity to respond to God’s call.

Baptism of Our Lord—January 11, 2015

Summary: When Jesus was baptized, Mark tells us the heavens split open and the Holy Spirit said to Jesus, “You are my beloved.” You probably don’t remember, but when water was poured over you at your baptism, God said that you are God’s child. Here is a paper cutout like a drop of water. Use it to remind you of your baptism and remember that God is with you everyday.

Summary: Today we are celebrating the Epiphany, so we have new people at the crèche. The Magi came from far away following a star, and then they went home by a different way.
