Pentecost—May 24, 2015

Summary: Today we celebrate Pentecost, and the fire shown on the altar hanging represents that story. On the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came in wind and fire. Here I have a box with the Holy Spirit. You may think it’s empty, but that is empty space for the Spirit to fill, just like on Pentecost. In the next few weeks, I want you to bring things that show the Spirit at work, and we will talk about them during our conversation.

Ascension Sunday—May 17, 2015

Summary: Today we celebrate the Ascension. Forty days after Easter, Jesus ascended into heaven, and the Gospel doesn’t say he came back down. So, on Ascension Sunday, I should be able to throw this ball up and it won’t come back. Why doesn’t it work? Well, we know Jesus ascended, but we also know he is with us always. So Jesus never really left us, and God’s love is always with us.

Summary: Today’s Gospel talks about love over and over, but just what is love? The agape love Jesus is talking about cannot be earned. God loves each of us that way. A wonderful thing about love is that when you give it away, you never run out.

Easter V—May 3, 2015
Preacher: Pastor Jeff Lilley
Summary: We don’t have many grapes here in Hawai‘i, so you probably haven’t seen any growing on a vine. After the grapes are picked, all the old leaves and branches get cut away, and there is what looks like a dead vine. But when spring comes, there are leaves and sweet grapes grow. Today’s Gospel tells us that Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. Because Jesus is always with us, and because we are joined to God through Christ, we will bear good fruit just like the vine in the Gospel.

Summary: Sheep aren’t very smart and wander off, so they need a shepherd. We’re a little like sheep and need someone to lead us and take care of us. Jesus is our good shepherd because he lays down his life for us.

We should show our love for creation and share God’s love all the time and every day.
