Easter Thank You
I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.—Philippians 1:3
As we leave Holy Week and enter the Easter Season, this verse from Paul is repeating itself in my head. I give thanks to God for your energy, your care, your dedication, your time, and your talent that y’all so graciously shared this Lent and Holy Week time.
There were so many people who helped to make the events happen with utmost hospitality, graciousness, praise, and thanksgiving to God.
It was amazing to see all the volunteers here on Holy Saturday, preparing the courtyard and the Nave for our celebrations. Then actually seeing the flames dance in the fire pit as we lit the first light of Easter and thinking of the preparation and planning that went into each and every service was witnessing a labor of love. Walking into the nave, after the dark of the courtyard, I was struck with awe of the colors, the sounds, and the utmost joy.
Words cannot express my thanks and gratitude for each and every one of you and the part you played in giving worship and praise to our loving God, to coming together as ‘ohana and worshipping, fellowshipping, and being God’s people in this place.
Mahalo,
Pastor Lesley
First Mondays Concerts: May Day Is Lei Day
Monday, May 5 at 7:00 pm
Lei Day embodies the spirit of aloha, with each lei representing the heartfelt connection between giver and receiver. The creation of a lei—through the gathering of materials, preparation, and weaving—is infused with the mana, or spirit, of its maker. Honoring this celebration through music, the Lutheran Church of Honolulu welcomes vocalist Starr Kalāhiki, who will lead us on a musical adventure that will warm your soul and uplift your spirit!
All are invited to gather for pūpū in the Hörmann Courtyard and 6:15 pm. The concert is free, with a suggested donation $20. In addition, we will continue to collect packaged, unopened dry goods (e.g., cereal, flour, sugar, pasta, etc.) and canned food donations for the Angel Network at each concert.
Adult Forum Studies Land Acknowledgements
Sundays at 9:00 am • In-person in the Boardroom
What is a land acknowledgement, why do we have them at LCH, and how do we want to think about them? Adult Forum will host “Songs and Stories of the Land,” a four-week presentation led by Stan Baptista that explores the history, significance, and future of land acknowledgements, as we deepen our connection to the land and our shared values. This presentation will highlight the apologies to both the Native Americans and Native Hawaiians. Come to our first informative presentation at 9:00 am on May 4 in the Boardroom.
Join members of the Adult Forum for this stimulating discussion on Sunday mornings in-person in the Boardroom. If you are coming for worship, just get your coffee and head to the Boardroom at 9:00 to join the others who are there.
From Pastor Lesley
Legend has it that Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words. His response was, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” In November 2006, Larry Smith, founder of what was then called SMITH Magazine, gave the six-word novel a personal twist by asking his community to describe their lives in exactly six words. He called these brief life stories “Six-Word Memoirs.”
As I read this, I began to wonder what my Six-Word Memoir might be. I am guessing it would be, “Jesus loves us. This I know.” What would be your Six-Word Memoir? I’ve also been thinking about that question in relationship to Jesus and the Easter story. What would Jesus’ Six-Word Memoir be? Perhaps, it would be, “I arose; the grave is powerless.”
As we continue the Easter season, I wonder how Jesus’ memoir impacts our own memoir and how we choose to live our lives? How does the truth that death is powerless over Jesus allow us to live in that freedom? For me, it gives me hope. It allows me to be bold in my declaration of God’s love for God’s world.
Diane Butler Bass, in A Beautiful Year, says, “In the world we experience, death as the last thing. It is the final act of all lives. In the Christian year, however, life follows death. The end of everything is the beginning of unimagined and unexpected newness.”
We have entered a season of unimagined and unexpected newness. How does that statement make you feel? Does it scare you? You know the old joke, “How many Lutherans does it take to change a light bulb? None; Lutherans don’t change.” Does the above statement perhaps fill you with anticipation and hope, wondering what God will invite us to next?
Perhaps your reaction is a little bit of both. The old traditions are important. They help us to feel comfortable and safe. However, while they make us feel safe, we can also get stuck and not be open to what the Holy Spirit might be wanting to do among us.
God is inviting us to a new thing: to transformation this Easter season and beyond. How will we respond? Will the promise of Jesus’ victory over all move us forward into transformation and new life? Will we remember when we write our Six Word Memoir that we are children of a God who will never let the darkness overcome us, nor death have the last word.
As we enter into the Easter season and beyond, may our own Six-Word Memoir reflect the power, truth and hope of Jesus’ memoir “I arose; the grave is powerless.”
God’s richest blessings and my prayers,
Pastor Lesley

Growing II
Cindy Scheinert, in last month’s Stewardship Corner, wrote of worship as a “natural place to look to grow one’s faith,” adding that it now plays a central role in her life. Worship certainly provides a foundation for me, and maybe for all of you, to approach whatever lies ahead in the new week. Like Cindy, I, too, marvel at a strong sense of God’s presence in nature. I particularly see God in the patterns one notices in nature that are referred to as sacred geometry–things like a spider web or snowflake or the patterns on a butterfly’s wings, or a leaf. Prayer, too, provides an opportunity for spiritual growth, as we listen and discern where God might be leading us. Listening in this way, we might feel directed towards a lifechanging and new way to be God’s hands and feet in the world
It was an appreciation for nature and God’s creation that took us on Saturday, April 12, to the shores of the Ala Wai Canal where three staff and one student from ‘Iolani School as well as eleven of us from LCH, joined in the effort to create a healthy habitat for native fish and plants in the canal by picking up all kinds of trash. Recorders counted every piece, assigning them to specific categories. We picked up plastic and metal bottle caps, many cigarette butts, varieties of plastic pieces of all sizes, metal, rubber, foam, glass, cloth, etc. At the end, all that was collected was weighed and amounted to a grand total of 399 pounds. A couple staff members picked up larger items like picnic umbrellas, shopping carts, back packs, buckets, clothing, etc. that had washed up right on the banks after heavy rains brought them downstream. We also learned about invasive fish that the school is working to eliminate so that native fish can better thrive in the canal.
Growing, especially growing in faith, like learning, is an ongoing part of life. It happens as we live life and as we put our faith into action, having been sent out from worship to serve the neighbor or live out God’s love in the world. It happens as we journey through life’s challenges and life’s joys. It happens as God sometimes calls us out of our comfort zones to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God.” We grow in faith by working with and serving others. We grow in faith by connecting with others and listening to their stories. We grow in faith by daring to do things we’ve never done before as the Holy Spirit pulls or pushes or fires us up to go in new directions. I know each of you uses your God-given gifts to touch others in meaningful ways. May we all be about God’s work of “doing justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with our God.”
We as a community have begun growing our web of connection in a variety of ways: through our music ministry; our care for creation, whether planting or cleaning; our sandwich prep for IHS; our meal prep for One Pot, One Hope in Wai‘anae; hosting Free Store events; providing our spaces for other musical groups, AA meetings, condo board meetings, tutoring, and music lessons; and on and on.
This month, the Stewardship Team is planning a prayer walk in our immediate neighborhood. Members of St. Clement’s Episcopal Church will join us. A brochure will be provided on that day with a one-mile route, including suggested stopping points and prayers for each location. See the next article for details.
As we do all these things and share God’s love with others, we strengthen our community connections. At the same time, we also strengthen our faith.
Let us continue to grow in faith as we walk life’s journey together.

Transition Team Update
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”—Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”—Jeremiah 29:11
Aloha from the Transition Team. We pray that your Lenten and Holy Week worship filled you with the power of the Holy Spirit, as we are called to be the witnesses and proclaimers of the Good News of God. We would ask that you prayerfully consider what was most life-giving in worship for you this Lenten and Holy Week time and let the Transition Team know. This information will help us as we complete the Site Profile to identify the God-given gifts we desire our called pastor to have, so together we can be about God’s work, with our hands.
Just a reminder, please. Don’t forget to check out the bulletin board in Isenberg and let us know where you live. This will give us a good picture of where our ‘ohana live and travel from to be a part of our LCH faith community.
Also, starting June 15, the Transition Team will be asking everyone to complete a spiritual-gifts inventory. This will help us have an accurate accounting of all the God-given gifts we have in our community. This awareness of our own spiritual gifts will guide us when we are seeking a called pastor to come and share their God-given gifts with us in our faith community.
We also ask that you continue to hold the Transition Team in your prayers, that God will guide us and give us wisdom as we do our work.
Mahalo and blessings,
The Transition Team.

Calling All Eucharistic Ministers!
Some time ago LCH had a team of lay eucharistic ministers who visited homebound members, bringing them aloha from their church ‘ohana (family) and sharing communion with them. We are reviving this important ministry of the “priesthood of all believers.” It is a ministry which nurtures our homebound community by keeping them connected to their ‘ohana and sharing Christ’s presence with them in the eucharistic meal.
This ministry will involve monthly visits and, depending on how many volunteers participate, we hope to send people to visit in pairs. Four new communion kits have been purchased. We will set aside one Sunday a month, likely the first, to lift up this ministry with a blessing liturgy for the ministers and communion kits.
If you are interested, please contact Pastor Lesley (pr.lesley@lchwelcom.org) or Pastor Phyllis (phllshrmnn7@gmail.com) by email. Training will be provided after worship June 1, and our lay eucharistic ministers will be commissioned in worship on Pentecost, June 8.

Beer and the Bible 2.0: Pilgrimage to Lutherland to Renew Your Spirit(s)
May 24 through June 5, 2026
There’s a trip afoot; another event to include as part of our 125th anniversary celebration. Dr. Barry Wenger, our director of music, Jean Lilley, and Pr. Phyllis Hörmann are planning a pilgrimage to Germany, where we will walk in the footsteps of Martin Luther and revisit our heritage as well as renew our spirits. We are working with Christian Tours Europe based in Wittenberg.
The target departure date for this trip is May 24,, 2026, and the return date is June 5. It will start in Berlin and end in Prague. Travel will be by private motor coach. Between Berlin and Prague, we will spend time in Wittenberg, Torgau, Leipzig, Eisleben, Erfurt, Eisenach, and Dresden. It will be a pilgrimage filled with interesting stories and history from a couple of pastors as well as local guides. Besides walking in Luther’s footsteps, we will visit other significant religious and historical sites, museums, churches, and castles and see some beautiful countryside. We will hear organ concerts compliments of Dr. Barry and possibly other organists or a choir. Details and registration information will be available in the next few weeks, as we continue our planning with the tour company.
Space is limited! Our current plans are for a group of 30 participants. Once registration is open, we will operate on a first come, first served basis. LCH ‘ohana members will have priority, but we will open the tour up to others should we have room. Cost is based on the number of participants and for 30 is $2800/person for double occupancy. Included in the cost is ground transportation, hotel accommodations, and most meals, entrance fees, and tips. It does not include air fare to and from Europe. A non-refundable $1,000 deposit will be required upon submission of the registration form. Deadline is still to be determined. Full payment is due 10 weeks prior to departure. Payments are to be made to the Lutheran Church of Honolulu.
Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from Europe. Randy Christensen has kindly offered to help with flight arrangements for those who wish it and will book a desired flight for $25. Should you choose to book a flight he finds, there is no charge.
A couple of notes up front: Participants may consider purchasing trip insurance to cover health, including medical transportation, if necessary, trip cancellation, and loss of baggage. You will need a passport (check your expiration date now). Also, please note that there will be a certain amount of walking involved as we tour the small towns of Luther. Some hotel accommodations may not have elevators and steps may be involved as well.
