NEW! Silver Tsunami Committee

Silver Tsunami Committee logoAn exciting new group at LCH has been formed—the Silver Tsunami Committee! Our main purpose is to support the needs of our seniors, both within our congregation and in the community at large. Our first project is to create a speaker/workshop series. We will invite specialists from the community to lead discussions and workshops on the top concerns (and celebrations) of being kūpuna.

But first, we’d like to hear from you! Keep a lookout for an upcoming short survey, asking for your concerns either as a kupuna or a caregiver or both. What kinds of topics would you like to see covered in the series? Resources and activities for seniors and caregivers? Health care? Mental health? Keeping up with technology? Transportation? Fear of burdening loved ones? Social Security/Medicare? Loneliness and isolation?

We will provide hard copy surveys as well as electronic. Based on your answers, we will create the speaker/workshop series. For more information, contact Teresa McCreary by calling or texting 808-284-4687 or by email to tmccreary@hpu.edu.

From Pastor Lesley

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.—Isaiah 43:18–19

Just a few hours before I began to write this article for the January HeartBeat, I hit the submit button on the ELCA website and sent LCH’s Ministry Site Profile (MSP) on its way to the Pacifica Synod. While doing that, I prayed that the Holy Spirit will guide the process as you will soon be actively searching for and discerning who God is calling to be your next pastoral ministry partner.

I hope the above statement that the MSP is on its way made your heart jump a beat, perhaps just like John jumped in Elizabeth’s womb when he heard the voice of Mary, the mother of Jesus, during Mary’s visit to Elizabeth. I pray that you are experiencing excitement, anticipation, wonder, trust, faith, and so much more as the congregation sets off on this new thing that God is about to do.

These last 15 months, I’m sure have left indelible marks on each of you individually and communally. The Bible verse that comes to mind when I think of what these last 15 months might have been like for you is Romans 5:3–5: Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

My advice, as you enter this next phase of the transition time, is to hold tight to the hope that has been nurtured and grown in you these last 15 months. Hold tight to the community that has been forged and strengthen by common experiences. Be open to the moving of the Holy Spirit. Be open to things that might seem different and unfamiliar. Remember God is doing a new thing! Ask yourself daily where have you seen God at work in your life, in the call process, within LCH, and in the greater community. Be strengthened and grow in the knowledge that God is abundantly present. Stay awake and alert. Look for the activities and signs of God’s presence and promise.

One more, very important bit of advice, given to Paul to the church of Thessalonica, which still applies today: Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

I can’t wait to see the new things that will spring forth from God’s abundant grace, mercy and love.

God’s richest blessings and my prayers and thanks,
Pastor Lesley

Ministry Site Profile Approved by the Synod Bishop!

It is a joy to announce that the synod bishop, David Nagler, approved the Ministry Site Profile (MSP) December 18 after it was approved by the LCH Council on the 16th and submitted to the Synod.

Please give a round of applause for the Transition Team, led by Mark Russell, with Laurie Leach, Keane Ishii, Linda Muller, Ayesha Nibbe, Barbara Poole-Street, and Dylan De Pretto under the guidance of Pastor Lesley Radius.👏👏 The LCH community deeply appreciates the dedication and extraordinary effort they put into creating an MSP that truly reflects who we are and what we are about in the mission to which God continues to call us.

The LCH Council is most grateful for the excellent and steadfast work of the Transition Team which started in its work this past spring. The congregation contributed by mapping home locations, by adding to the LCH history, and by participating in group discussions about LCH’s current and desired future and mission. The Transition Team synthesized all of the data and completed the MSP. It was a challenge to include all the elements people desired given the word count restrictions of the document, but they persevered. Mahalo.

Stewardship Corner

Growing Our Community

In our December Stewardship Corner, we introduced our theme from Isaiah (“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”) and told you about our focus for these two months: Growing Our Community.

Some of us who have been around for a while will remember the last century when any mention of “growth” in a church context automatically focused on getting more people to come to church and then getting them to become members. But that’s not the kind of growth we’re talking about.

We want to focus on ways we can make our community—our ‘ohana—stronger, more connected, and more grounded in faith. We want to know each other better, deepen our mutual trust, and learn from one another. To what end? As we strengthen the bonds between us, we grow our effectiveness in bringing God’s love to the world. We want to be more like the early church where “the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul” (Acts 4:32).

In our modern hectic and fractured world, being of “one heart and soul” is a tall order, but we think we can move closer to that goal. So, as a first step, we are organizing a retreat on Saturday, January 24, from 10:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon. Everyone is welcome. There will be a variety of activities for young and old, long-time members and newcomers. We will provide refreshments and a reasonably-nutritious lunch, and there is no charge.

The morning will begin with time to mingle, after which we will form teams for a scavenger hunt so you can both explore the nooks and crannies of our campus and learn more of the story leading up to LCH as it is today. Following the debriefing from the scavenger hunt, we will have a menu of activities to choose from. Some may get you moving, some may be opportunities to learn something new, and others may allow for peaceful meditation.

Following lunch, we will all gather to make kokedama (Japanese for “moss ball”), a traditional Japanese art form where a plant’s root ball is encased in a ball of soil, covered in moss, and then wrapped with string, creating a unique, pot-free living sculpture. We will provide the materials and instruction so you can make your own kokedama to take home.

More details will be included in the eNews. Sign up on January 11 or 18 to participate in this retreat to grow our community.

God is definitely doing new things here at LCH. Don’t you want to be part of it?

The Stewardship Team (Phyllis Hörmann, Mark Russell, Bill Potter, Barb Poole-Street, Willow Chang, Cindy Scheinert)

LCH Safety and Security Committee Report

Numerous unsettling and unsafe situations on the LCH campus prompted church council to form a safety and security committee. The committee’s goal is to help better secure our property and to make it as safe as possible, while still welcoming all of God’s children.

The balance between safety/security and our welcoming spirit can be a delicate one. The committee has completed a federal online assessment designed for places of worship. This helped identify a multitude of safety and security deficiencies, with recommendations for resolving them.

Some improvements have already been made, including a Nest doorbell at the front door to allow staff in the office to monitor who is coming in. Security camera replacements should happen in the near future.

You may have noticed the doors to Isenberg Hall can no longer be locked and open inward, to provide open egress in the event of an emergency. The door to the kitchen will remain locked when not in use. This and illuminated exit signs at the doors on either side of the altar are required by our insurance carrier, which will be conducting a full security and safety assessment for us in January.

The team is continuing to prioritize what’s appropriate for our church ‘ohana and is open to suggestions and recommendations. We continue to seek expert advice and explore more resources to create safe, secure, and welcoming space at LCH.

Volunteers needed—Youth Fundraiser!

Punahou Carnival Parking • Friday & Saturday, February 6 & 7

We need adult and youth volunteers for three-hour shifts during the carnival on both days. Event coordinators provide snacks and drinks, flashlights, and safety vests, and you provide the fellowship! Sign-up sheets will be made available in the Hörmann Courtyard after worship service. Volunteer shifts on both Friday, February 6, and Saturday, February 7, are: 10:30 am–1:30 pm, 1:30–4:30 pm, 4:30–7:30 pm, and 7:30–10:30 pm. Thank you!

Faith and Arts Weekend, February 14th and 15th

For our Faith and Arts celebration this year, we would like to showcase a variety of entertainment on Saturday evening, February 14th, followed by an exhibit of creative work from the congregation on Sunday morning, February 15th. If the spirit moves you, please tell us what you would like to do for Saturday evening. In the past, participants played instruments, sang songs, danced, told stories, or read poems and short essays. On Sunday morning, we would like to display your art, photography, written work, or craft items after the service in Issenberg Hall or on the bulletin board in the Hörmann Courtyard. We will accept items that have been displayed in the past. Here is what we need from you:

  • As soon as possible: Express your interest to participate in this event by contacting us in-person, or by phone, text or email. You’ll find our contact information below.
  • By February 1st: Tell us what you would like to do or perform on Saturday, February 14th and/or give us a description of your creative item(s) so that we can make labels for the exhibit on February 15th. If you wish to type a longer explanation of your work for the exhibit, please do so when you deliver your items to us or LCH.
  • By noon on February 13th: Deliver your items to LCH, where they will be kept in a safe place until they are displayed on Sunday, February 15th. Otherwise give your items directly to us any time between now and February 8th.

Coordinators: Please contact Willow Chang by phone (808-292-0820) or email (willowchang@hotmail.com) or Peter Flachsbart by phone (808-349-6046) or email (pflachsbart@gmail.com) to accept this invitation and receive answers to your questions.
